Netflix Defies Recession, Profit Soars

Internet movie rental service Netflix has defied the current economic crisis and posted an increase in quarterly profit of 45%, compared with the same period last year. The increase beat analysts estimates for the quarter.

In the last three months of last year, an extra 718,000 people signed up for Netflix in the United States. The service was launched 10 years ago, and offers DVD rental and video streaming direct to your home or computer.

Overall, Netflix earned US$22.7 million in the quarter, or 34 cents a share.

  duh...
they are offering a product and service that people both want, like and are happy with the price of.

if the people behind the retail industry for movies (and even music) had half a brain (and we know they don't...lol) they would be offering a competitive price for their product... there's absolutely no reason why movies should cost $15-30 each, thats nothing more than proving "there's a sucker born every minute".

although in my opinion ANY torrent site is a better service than netflix... and thats not just a cost value comparison, because you obviously wont beat free, unless they start paying people to watch their movies (lol). but you also get to choose your quality depending on how much bandwidth you want to commit to it everything from a cd sized dvdrip to a full comcompressed blu-ray rip... good luck with finding a better service than torrent for movies...

and using things like itunes for buying
music is just absurdly stupid at the end of the day the cd costs about the same anyways, so it any even worse service than netflix by comparison, even though you get to keep your itunes music but not your netflix movies.

and in either case its not like you aren't already paying for it a you pay for a set amount a bandwidth it shouldn't matter what your using it for beit movies, music or gaming.

This doesn't surprise me but it does
disturb me. In true apathetic form, rather than try to learn an alternative means of income, people bury their heads in the sand.... or in this case, in movies that distract them (albeit temporarily) from the truth surrounding them.

People are making cuts in their lives to save money. Netflix is actually a service that can HELP with that. Instead of going out to see the new movie at $8.50/ticket + concessions, why not wait for it to hit DVD format and get it shipped to you?

Want to go out on a Friday night but have no money to? That's okay, invite a friend or two over and sit back and watch the new DVD you got in the mail from Netflix on Wednesday because you didn't have time to watch it the rest of the week due to work and whatnot.

Cuts in one place are making growths in others. It's a lot easier to spend $15 a month renting DVDs through a mail service than spending $100+ a weekend going out and doing things when money's tight.

Why pay for video stimuli when it can be perfectly free? Oh it can be delivered To my HOME can it??? Well We live in an Era of having any movie you can think of at our finger tips yet people still continue to pay. OMGS its illegal? so is underage drinking but that didnt stop you from having some drinks in highschool did it?

Agreed. If you watch two movies a month or more, Netflix is actually a way to save money (in most cases). Save on gas, ticket prices, or rental prices if you're getting a few movies.

Plus their "watch instantly" thing is pretty cool... if you like B movies and documentaries.

I thought this also, and used torrent's a lot. Until I got an email from my ISP that said they had found an illegal download of one of the movies I got. So I deleted everything and stoped. SCARy.

I like Netfilx because I can stream to my xbox 360 - but I like Blockbuster more.

We usually watch 20-30 movies a month, if not more. Granted we've cut from 3 at a time to 1 at a time now, but even then it will be 10-14 movies a month. At 7 bucks a month thats about 50 cents a movie.

I have found more than B Movies,,, I like the fact I can watch, CSI, Numbers, NCIS episodes on there the next day after they are on. I know that you can stream them from the CBS website, but they are way better on Net Flix, 16x9 wide screen infact. I know there are some older movies, I grant you that, but I have found that the older movies are fun to watch too, better than taking up the mail out queue. I went to my buddies house and we had an 80's weekend, his daughters thought the movies where more funny in the 80's.

I wish i could get netflix,
i don't think it's available in Australia. The movie industry needs to get it's shit together, rather then investing in a new format they should be investing in digital distribution, less costs more profit actually having an alternative to pirated content. My idea is that when ever you goto a movie you keep your ticket, that ticket information is sent to some movie consortium, now when the movie becomes available for digital download if you are in possession of a movie ticket you get a discount, this would not only encourage people to go to the movies but also to purchase movies. All movies should be available in multiple formats, multiple sizes, phone size, standard definition, high definition. Once you have purchased a movie the information should be stored on your account and you should be able to download the movie when ever you want or stream the movie. This would allow people to not have to physically store there content at home.

I agree with you and I am all for cutting out waste. I can't help but see, though, that too many Americans are spending time watching movies and ball games all the while wondering if they are going to be laid off tomorrow. I can tell you this.. if I worked for a someone else and there was even a hint that my job was in jeopardy, I would be working hard and fast to find another job BEFORE I got laid off or if need be, I would be learning another trade. Does Netflix rent "How to earn a living" videos? I'm sure they have something of that genre but those flicks have no fanciful plots, fake explosions or gratuitous partial nudity so I'm sure they sit on a shelf somewhere collecting dust.

I don't mean to insult anyone but facts are facts and movies don't change the fact that we are in horrible shape right now. People need to wake up and realize that this recession will probably get much worse before it gets any better. Again, I don't mean to be ugly about it but I do mean to be blunt.

So, you're against people finding 2 hours worth of relief from their depressive state which you're certainly not giving remedy to? It's not that easy. A lot of people who have gotten laid off or will get laid off are much older and just don't have the resources or ability to pick up a new trade. Even the people who do just simply can't find jobs, they aren't out there. This is a success story, lol. If people weren't using the service there would be MORE layoffs. It's not all about money and worrying where your next pay check is going to come from. Sometimes, people need to take a few steps back and just be human beings. Do you think homeless people think about being homeless all the time?

  Not surprising
at all when it costs $30 now (not including costs of fuel to get there) to take my son to a Sunday Matinee!

No wonder McDonalds and Wal-Mart are also defying the recession.
