UK Child Maintenance Reforms

In a latest concentrated effort on the problems of absent fathers and mothers who refuses to pay child maintenance, the government is putting forward a new bill which will go before UK Parliament.

The Welfare Reform Bill will give the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission powers to demand parents instantly hand over personal documents such as driving licences and passports until their financial responsibilities are met.

Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell said: "We are supporting parents in these tough times, but for those who choose not to support their own kids, we will not stand by and do nothing. We want fair rules for everybody.”

  I agree
If there's a choice between losing your driving licence and passport or simply quitting work and waiting for the free cash to start rolling in, I'd hand in my notice.

Equally, the working man, taxed to high heaven who can't afford the maintenance gets his driving licence taken away, can't drive to work, loses job, becomes another drain on society. Government fail.

Not if it is back dated..
Those "who can't afford the maintenance gets his driving licence taken away, can't drive to work, loses job, becomes another drain on society. Government fail."

But they should pay it is their child, but you will have some that won't want to pay as well as those that do, all in a right mess if it has to be back dated.

  You know
I am all for supporting your own children but lots use the system and abuse it to death, and then demand more. Taking away personal items I don't think will help especially when the spouses or ex's use it as a form of power or control over the other. It's is like our useless AVO's( Apprehended Violence Orders) here in Australia. They don't prevent the abuse and over work of the court system and are used to death and do nothing.

  @ Sleeky...
Plus the fact it can dig up old dirt, causing murders, many need to lose these ex's and for good reason, this will really stir up old dirt, this decision was made before because of the risks it carried, it looks like no one ever learns these lessons and keep on repeating the mistakes.
But these people have nothing to fear only the people who get beaten stalked or even killed they are the ones that will get hurt and not the policy maker, they can sleep safely in their homes, with no problems.

  I just found this...
and it explains what I mean..

NEW ORLEANS - A man who initially told police gunmen kidnapped his 2 1/2-year-old son was arrested Saturday, accused of committing an "extremely hideous" murder because he was ordered to pay child support, Police Superintendent Warren Riley said.

Danny Platt confessed, told police where to find the child's body and will be booked with first-degree murder of Ja' Shawn Powell, Riley said at a news conference.

"He had said he would kill either his wife or his child before he paid child support," which he recently had been ordered to do, Riley said
