Michael Phelps Cops Three-Month Suspension

USA Swimming has suspended Olympic champion Michael Phelps, 23, after he was photographed smoking a bong (SN reported). Phelps was set to make a return to professional swimming for the first time since wowing the world at the Beijing Olympics.

USA Swimming said: "This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids..."

They added that, "Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust." This is the second blow in as many days for Phelps, who lost his sponsorship contract with Kellogg (SN reported).

Seriously ... the US needs to chill the F out
The fact that this guy was able to gain 15 Gold medals and set 7 World Records is no short feat!!!

All this, while smoking the cheech and chong. Just goes to show that your war against this drug is a big waste of time and money.

I know far too many people who would much rather see their kid smoking pot than they would cigarettes ... yet, that is legal ...

Canada would have already decriminalized this had it not been for the pressure put on us by the US.

  Poor guy...
He spent how many years doing nothing but Sleep, Swim, Eat, Sleep, Swim, ..... and he goes out for a good time for once and some jackass had to snap a picture... And they are suspending him because of how he acted not that he broke any rules..

  Mild enough
Seems like a mild enough punishment. I can understand that the sports federation has to go through the motions. This 'controversy' is pretty funny though. When Canadian snowboarder, Ross Rebagliati, nearly lost his gold medal over testing positive for marijuana, he actually became a bigger celebrity in Canada. Now all of Canada knows to blame secondhand inhaling, a natural part of our lifestyle.

and yet at the same time, he went out and had a good time and was stupid enough to smoke a bong where people obviously had cameras and could have blackmailed him or worse now as we see...yeah...

  To be honest...
I don't really see how it has anything to do with USA Swimming what he does in his private life.

He brings them back so many gold medals and they punish him?!

He has to earn back "their trust."

Tell them to stick their trust up their ass. If i were him i'd try to enter into competitions myself without the USA Swimming.

They have control issues.

  Lock this looney up!
And throw away the key! It's a shame when people think they are ABOVE the law.

All he really lost was Kellogg.
Which is really that companies choice, and it's not like that throws him into the poor house (his quote at the source say a good 90% of his sponsors still support him). They suspended a swimmer for three months. This isn't like a normal sport where there are events after events. His biggest event is still years away, so when he brings home six more golds in '12, we can all laugh a little more at this silliness.

  hahaha i actually blame him
ya know why?

because this jerk had the chance to stand up and say "yeah, I did it, so what. Im still the best swimmer ever, in the world. So the only apology I will offer is this, 'Im sorry if you're offended, that you could be offended by something like this, and I suggest you read your history on Marijuana, you could start by googling the name Harry J Anslinger. Yes I'm not only a great swimmer but also educated. So if you want to drop me fine, i'm already rich and don't need the money. And i'll still be the best swimmer in the world. And I am a role model. I can show that you can be normal AND super insanely successful. How weird. Peace.
