South African Scientists yesterday said that an early study involving an experimental vaginal gel has shown promise in preventing the person using the gel being infected with AIDS. Results are not conclusive, but they do offer hope.
Salim Abdool Kraim, one of the scientists presenting the findings, said: "This is the first study that now shows we have a promising candidate." The study involved approximately 3,100 women and was mainly designed to test the safety of the gel.
Control groups included two which used different kinds of gel, and one with a placebo and one with no gel at all. All women involved were told to make their partners use condoms. Women across Africa and in the US took part.
