Athlete Tosses Medals She Won When Finding Out She's Really a Man

China: Chengdu resident Xiao Nan, who recently discovered through hospital tests that she's really male, has tossed out 30 of 40 medals won while competing in athletic events.

Said Xiao, "Being a champion was never a happy thing to me. Standing on the podium made me feel guilty, and I always thought the real champion should have been the one standing next to me." The wins provided free university education and great honor.

"I felt I often had an impulse or desire for women instead of men. And my body is more like a man than a woman," said Xiao, who has male chromosomes. A nine-month course of sex change surgeries has now been undertaken.

Wow when and how did this happen? If she is undergoing surgery now to correct the situation, what is it she was born as? Which genitalia?

I am more confused than her.

Trying to jam all the info I can into a story sometimes does that :-)

Don't think for a moment that I could ever approach viz's level of poetic license, he is without peer.

I've been reading about this recently
There are so many variants to the typical XX and XY it's amazing. Although having even one Y technically makes you a man, it hasn't stopped Y people from essentially being women, also some X only people can get other women pregnant. There's X, XXX, XXY, XYY, and so many other things can spring up after the fact, making even XX or XY not quite fully male or female. Intersexual is the general term. I think the very fact "men" can become pregnant, and "women" can get women pregnant, nullifies the last of the arguments that marriage should only be between a "man" and a "woman". Some of the sets are as common as 1 in 1000.
  by: promontorium   03/06/2009 02:55 PM
That's a very good point. If marriage is "between a man and a woman" then it is illegal for any variation from man or woman to marry anyone at all.
  by: VermiciousG     03/06/2009 09:43 PM
Your idiocy astounds me sir. Go back and retake your BSc in Biology.

How do you define these "women" or "men" then? A person who can impregnate, ie. having testes, or an individual that can get pregnant, ie. having ovaries and a uterus, would never have external genitalial characteristics that would suggest inclusion to the opposite sex.

For example, a man who is able to conceive using sperm would not lack a penis to suggest that he is masculine, and vice-versa. The reasons being that the same hormones which are responsible for gonadal differentiation are also responsible for the development of external genitalial characteristics.

You may argue that ambiguous sexual characteristics support your argument of intersex, but this is simply not true to the FACT that most individuals who exhibit intersex characteristics are INFERTILE.

Marriage is a religious concept; it was never a scientific one. This is because it was based on the notion that an ideal representation of a male and a female can procreate to produce progeny.

Intersex individuals cannot do this. I am not sure where you procure your information but you are in dire need of the skill that only years of schooling can give you: the ability to discern your literary sources and recognizing fact from falsehood.

I am abhorred by the gullibility that you all display when a shiny piece of news reaches your desktop displays. Educate yourselves properly!

That was a nice attempt at using language. I seriously doubt that an educated scientist would show such indignation and lack of fluid thought.
  by: VermiciousG     03/07/2009 08:05 PM
  I see..
no lack of fluid thought, it was a very well reasoned response. Your absence of any sort of rebuttal displays your lack of any incite into the subject. So you are reduced to declaiming against him.
  by: Rayn     03/08/2009 11:41 AM
I concur. Verm's attempt at pointing out TheScientist's total failure is not only unfounded, but puts Verm in an awkward position, since he has entered the argument under his own terms. His clear lack of any real fluid thought also reveals his lack of intellect on a topic he could've just as easily kept his mouth shut on.

On another thread blac, I believe refered to you as a fellow Libertarian. I don't recall you confirming or denying it so I'm curious. Are you a libertarian?
  by: VermiciousG     03/09/2009 03:42 AM
wow, calm down. It's the hermaphro with a problem
.. so why are all you guys whipping out your ding-a-lings to see who's got the best background on science/medical link.

  by: redstain   03/09/2009 04:19 AM
  What is a libertarian?
Will someone kindly enlighten me.
by: white albino   03/09/2009 10:54 AM
  @white albino
I'd prefer to leave that to Rayn but she appears to have lost interest in this thread.

As I understand it, and anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, there are two facets to Libertarianism. "Fiscal Libertarians" I won't discuss because it's irrelevant here and "Civil Libertarianism"

One of the central tenants of Civil Libertarianism is that if something is not specifically banned by the constitution and doesn't encroach on someone else's rights then it is allowed. I.E. Pot smoking, prostitution, gay marriage, etc.

That's how I had it explained to me by my economics teacher. Like I said. I could be wrong.

People with libertarian beliefs used to be referred to as liberals. Until what I guess you could call progressives got a hold of the term and bastardized it to the point in which not even democrats want to be associated with the word. They ascribe to an economic policy of Laissez-faire which consists of Austrian School, Chicago School, Anarcho Capitalism and a few others. Laissez-faire translates roughly from french as allowing events to take their course. They ascribe to the theory of Spontaneous Order pioneered by the Austrian Economists Friedrech Hayek and Murray Rothbard and first thought to be developed by Zhuangzi. The idea is that the spontaneous order of people pursuing their own ends and desires will produce a far better market and economy than a planned economy such as a Socialist or Communist Market. Black Markets are such a spontaneous order they are in effect warnings that the economy is not functioning correctly due to some sort of constriction in place through legislation.

Many do not seperate free market from personal freedom. Believing that if you can not have a free market you can not be free. A good example would be Friedrech Hayek "Economic control is not merely control of a sector of human life which can be separated from the rest; it is the control of the means for all our ends. And whoever has control of the means must also determine which ends are to be served, which values are to be rated higher and which lower, in short, what men should believe and strive for." ~Hayek

As far as Personal Freedom goes they ascribe to the belief that your freedom ends when another's begins. What you do with your body, whether it be prostitution or drug use is your own business, As your body is the ultimate form of your personal property. They are mainly pro choice although there are some that believe it should be left up to the states.

As far as foreign policy goes it is largely split between Jacksonian And Jeffersonian. With the Majority being Jeffersonian.

They believe in a very limited Federal Government, believing that anything that the market can not account for such as roads or police or free education or free legal defense should be provided by the city and state.

  @Rayn and VermiciousG
Thank you for your explanations of Libertarianism.
It is appreciated.

So if I understand you, and as always correct me if I'm wrong, anyone lacking "skill that only years of schooling can give you" is a gullible idiot and anyone having both male and female genetic characteristics only belongs to the gender that their genitalia "suggests"?

What about children born with both male and female genitalia. Like the ones with one ovary and one testicle.
