Comedian Stephen Colbert has entered a contest run by NASA to name a new node set for the International Space Station. Colbert on Tuesday urged his fans to put his name in the running, after despairing over the names chosen by NASA.
Of the names Earthrise, Legacy, Serenity and Venture, Colbert said: "Those aren't space modules, those are organic teas. But you know what name would look fantastic on the side of that module? Colbert!" By Wednesday, he was second on the list.
This is the second time NASA has asked for public participation in naming space equipment. The module in question will contain racks and the station's life support system, as well as a six-window observation deck. Voting is on at NASA's web site.
