Obama's Bowling Is "Like The Special Olympics Or Something" Audience Found It Funny Too

On the "The Tonight Show" President Barack Obama told Jay Leno that he isn't pleased with his 129 score. The President uses the White Houses bowling alleys.

When Leno complimented him Obama himself replied with "It was like the Special Olympics or something," which received laughter from the audience.

The Deputy Press Secretary has told reporters "He thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world,".

  that..

would suck to not be able to make any jokes without offending someone. Not to mention almost totally impossible.

  Haha

Yeah, that was actually a pretty funny one.

What's ironic is that the Republicans who wanted Palin, a "normal down to Earth person" will be the ones who criticize Barack for making a normal down to Earth joke.

Well, it's nice to know that he's taking a bit of time with the public on the level.

Still, I hope he doesn't faff around too much with popularist ideals. Since our country has such pathetic and greedy leadership our only hope is that our population finally realises what scum has risen to the top here from the example he could present.

  Complete non issue.

I don't even think I can formulate the right words to express how utterly ridiculous it is that anyone is up in the air over such a simple comment.

I think some people walk around all day looking for a way to become offended.

  i'm not that offended

but i was shocked he said that. i like obama because he's so smart and eloquent - this seems a complete oversight on his part. c'est une faute de goût.

  Obama you suck

he actually caved in to issue a 'clarification' I hate it when people 'clarify' what they said. Either say it or don't. don't try to please everyone.

  @ bb "Complete non issue"

I guess we can assume that you are not the parent of a child with a serious disability, constantly worrying about whether or not your child will ever be truely accepted in society. It is a complete non issue to most people because most people simply don't care or stop to think about these people's feelings.

It has become commonly acceptible for a comedian to get cheap laughs at the expense of people with intellectual disabilities. This is deplorable and the President should never sink to this level.
Fortunatley the Special Olympics is an organization with class and is willing to look past Obama's joke.
Here is the link to the official response by the Special Olympics:
http://www.specialolympics.org/...

If he had made a racial or sexist joke, would this still be a "complete non- issue"? Would the associations representing racial minorities and the such be so forgiving?

I doubt it.

Why would anyone take offense to that? What, just because he's a president he's not allowed to crack any jokes that has anything to do with anyone living on earth? Leave him alone.

  by: Anthrox   03/20/2009 06:42 PM
  I for one am insulted...

A president that is ONLY a special olympic bowler?

NO! NO! NO! I want nothing less than an all around special olympics gold medal champion on all events!

I want sub-par performance on on every front possible from education, to energy and to foreign and domestic policy.

I am insulted this time around, my expectations were set quite high after the last president that broke countless records as a special olympian.

Im sure that this is going to start some $#!7, but to be perfectly honest if it weren't for advances in science and medicine people with certain disabilities wouldnt even survive to a point where they could compete in special olympics. I have nothing against people with disabilities and in fact my father passed away at 48 from a lifelong disability. However, there was a time when lifestyle and medicine didnt allow these people to live due to survival of the fittest and it annoys me to see them coddled by this idea that because theyre disabled they need to be treated any differently or "delicately" than anyone else. My father used to try and run me over in his electric wheel chair (jokingly) for fun, and he never got offended when i told him id kick his crippled a$$ for it. So im sick and tired of seeing all the political correctness over this.

At first, I was like most here and totally pissed at the PC of it all. When you started on the PC rally, I was starting to roll my eyes, however, your post was very good and did give me moment to think about what you said. I did agree partly with what you said, however...........

Obama was not doing it in a mean spirited way. He was not making fun of people with disabilities. He was making fun of himself. I was very close with someone who died from Alzheimer's Disease. Often, I will say or hear other people say, they must be suffering from Alzheimer's when they forgot something. It's not offensive and not meant to be offensive.

Every year, I volunteer for the Special Olympics and help with fund-raising. These are dedicated athletes with hearts of gold.

---------------

You know what... even writing this post gave me a bit of a change of heart. I am man enough and wise enough to realize my views can change and evolve. I started to think, "Would I make the same joke if the person wasn't Leno but a Special Olympics athlete?" No, I would not. What if the Special Olympics athlete was a friend of mine who I knew wouldn't be offended? No, I would not. I guess that's the difference. It was kind of funny joke but at the expense of others who may actually be hurt by it and when the laughter stops, the pain starts. I'm glad Obama (or his admin) recognized the error of that joke.

So, you were browsing the internet looking for a place to vent about the comment Obama made and you found a link to this article. Congratulations for being the second douche bag this week to sign up to Shortnews for the sole purpose of promoting your own pitiful agenda.
In answer to your question, no, I am not the parent of a cripple but I am a cripple and have been since I almost lost my foot to a gunshot wound when I was 13. You want to know what's even more funny than watching Obama bowl, watching me bowl!
Also, you're goddamn right I would have laughed if the joke had poked fun at race, religion or anything else for that matter. It was a joke, not an insult directed at a person or group of people.

If you don't want your feelings hurt, don't wear them on your nose, douche bag.

Ya, they used to institutionalize them. Ah, the good ol' days. (/sarcasm)

"A time when lifestyle and medicine didn't allow them to live..." Ummm, what?

Coddled? Treated differently or delicately? WTF planet are you from? They are asking not to be made fun of. Is that coddling or treating delicately? You made fun of your father, but I bet you if some citizen in the street told him that would "beat his crippled a$$" (like you did) or made fun of him, I bet you wouldn't have laughed it off.

So if a down syndrome Special Olympics athlete was standing if front of you, you would make jokes like, "hey man, when I was drunk last night, I looked and acted like you." hardyharhar

I am not usually on the PC bandwagon. Usually I am on the opposite side of the spectrum. Hell, I love the "Retarded Policeman" series on YouTube. But there has to a be foot-in-mouth, think-about-others-not-just-my-own-feelings, moral test.

  by: JStern   03/20/2009 07:06 PM
  Really?

Bush said that the Constitution is a God Damn peice of paper, and it got less attention than this?

Obama is human, and whether or not you take offense to this, millions of people say things like this every day. Not to say it is right, but it is what it is.

  by: jOnO_oRiGiNaL     03/20/2009 07:09 PM
  @jstern

If I was friendly with that person, yes.

Oh and, don't you mean "mentally challenged policeman" Oh my god! You have insulted all policemen and mentally challenged people! I demand an immediate apology.

You, sir, are a despicable human being for that insensitive comment!

BB

  by: bbeljefe     03/20/2009 07:28 PM

The difference BB is that Obama isn't friends with that person. So, when you say if you were friendly with that person (Down Syndrome athlete), you would make that comment, that means to me that if you didn't know the person, you wouldn't make the comment, right? You wouldn't know if they would take offense to it so you wouldn't say it to save them from hurt feelings.

Also, the term "retarded policeman" is not my term. I was quoting as are all the news agencies reporting Obama's statements on Leno.

  by: JStern   03/20/2009 07:52 PM
  ...

I don't get how honesty in a joking manner could ever be an insult. But then again most of this world is filled with crazy messed up people who's family genes will slowly dissapear thanks to natural selection.

But it's a widely known fact that people with down syndrome or people missing both arms can't really bowl all that well. So, by stating "my preformance was like the special olympics" simply stated that he sucks at bowling.
So although retards and disabled people suck at sports, there are the elite of retards that can actually play a sport and not totally suck, but when up against a norm, they seem as though they suck. When inface they are quite good for being retarded.

P.S. I didn't take the time to write this all politically correct, mostly cause i don't care, but "retard" and shit shouldn't be taken in offense, just needed to type this quick.

I can see how you would assume that I just joined shortnews to complain on this topic. But, I've been reading shortnews for over a year and I rarely even look at the comments. This issue however is very connected to me in a personal way.
I have opinions. You think I'm a douche for having them. I feel like my opinion is FAR less douche baggy than yours.
Try raising a child with Down Syndrome.
Sorry you blew your foot off.

He's the President and shouldn't have said that shit, not appropriate for a person in his position, even though he's somewhat blue-blooded. It was some ignorant shit for him to say and personally, it doesn't bother me. At least he didn't say that he bowls like a retard...

Jstern: Obama did not make that comment to any person, much less to a person he did not know.

xj900: Thanks for the clarification. My apologies for the assumption I made.

Lastly, both of you folks should try looking at the lighter side of everything life deals us. Humor is truly the best cure for sorrow. If you can't see that, I am truly sorry for you and yours.

  by: Mannyishere     03/21/2009 02:57 AM
  Missing the point

It's not the comment. Cause it's funny, and to hell with anyone who says differently. The problem is the stature of the man making the comment. He's not just a president, a guy that we all hope won't suck. He's THE foreign dignitary. As head of state, ideally he not only has to represent the best of Americans to america, but to the world over. Publicly, no more fun for obama. Privately, he can still be himself. Damn.. .what I would give for free lifetime bodyguards. That would be awesome.

On the contrary. He is a lowly public servant who's job it is to do the bidding of the people of this country. I don't mind him acting himself, in fact I prefer that public servants be themselves rather than put on airs as if they want me to think they are someone they are not.

I'm glad you shot your foot but pissed it wasn't ur head. This comment truely exposes us to the real side of the president. He really is a callous. disheartening individual just like yourself. That is the stupidest statement you make on here. You've posted that several times, and it gets more stupid every time you post it. Obama is the most articulate president we have ever had. He doesn't need a teleprompter or anyone 'guiding' him. You are an idiot.

Woooo. Special Olympics is not another name for retards (Excuse Moi) it is only another way of being politically correct, he may had not even meant to actually point that comment to the participants of the games.

I hope you are not the type, when you hear someone saying the word Bitch, you automatically associate it with women, do you!?

If intention is not to call a Kettle black, your comments to BB would be misconstrued as a 10 years old, claiming 75% of sandbox as theirs to play alone.

Morality is the act of adherence to a set of standards which define right and wrong. What Obama said has nothing to do with morality as he did not act against any predefined standard of good behavior. He made a joke, with himself as the butt of that joke. The mention of handicapped people was merely used as a benchmark which he claims to perform below.
Now, kindly crawl back into your cave and lurk until the next time someone bumps your hyper-sensitive feelings.

I don't agree with Obama's joke, but I don't think it was meant in a mean way. I don't think he is how you described him. He said something dumb, like I'm sure we all have. It was meant as a joke but he just wasn't thinking of the people it might hurt.

@BB
I do take a lighter side of life. I see humour in many things.

"Obama didn't make that comment to any person" What? Did you really mean to type that? He made the comment to Leno, the audience and the millions of viewers. I bet some of which are disabled or challenged (physically and mentally) and some are family or friends of the disabled.

So, I think you responded the way you did because you know you wouldn't make down syndrome jokes to a down syndrome person in front of you. Does it make it better if the joke is over a telephone to them or over the TV?

At least I was man enough to realize that my initial acceptance of this joke was erroneous and took a different stance.

  by: JStern   03/21/2009 06:17 PM
  @jstern

You clearly misunderstood what I meant.

"Obama didn't make that comment to any person" - This comment means that he wasn't talking about a certain person.

While I will admit that I don't look very smart, I am smart enough to know that Obama was not on the Tonight Show talking to himself.

Did you even think about what I said? I'll bet you just reacted.

Now if I were Hitler, to entertain your ridiculous response, I'd say people of different religions and colours ought to be killed for that reason. Compare that with genetic health, for instance "people with Down syndrome ought not to pass on their disability." Who would be so selfish to favour the pleasures of the patient over the good of society?

Regardless of your disability learn to laugh at your self it will make your life easier and happier.

This joke was probably the least important thing Obama said during the entire interview.
To those who've over reacted, you'd have to be an absolute idiot to generalize about the entire character of a man from a single statement. It seems a lot of people were just waiting for a flaw to pounce on.

@cray0la: "Telepromter" that's the best you could come up with. You're going to burn the man for that.

@Hutchins: What genetic disease are you afraid will spread into the population? Where are you going with this line of reasoning?

  Different?

I really can't believe that people whether it is in regards to religion, race, disability etc. have the audacity to say someone is out of line making a joke or not being polite to someone.

If you want to be an equal, then when I make fun, or don't like you because of any reason then realize that is what makes you equal. Women will look at each others hair, makeup, clothes and have a range of reactions from she looks nice to she must be a whore. If that same woman were to say that about a woman who was disabled or of another race does that change things? NO!

Men will look at the cars that other men drive or what kind of shape their in or the way they dress and make comments on their sexual orientation, how unlikely it is that those men are married etc. If they were all Christian men being criticized does that make it any worse? Again No!

The fact is that I don't like people for a lot of reasons. I will make decisions about that person before ever getting to know them. I will make fun of people I don't know, because deep down it distracts me from whatever I currently need distracting from. This is a fact of life, we all do it. So if I get mad because I have to wait in line longer than someone who gets to sit in a wheel chair but somehow is more inconvenienced by "Standing" in line than me. Don't get upset with me. I'm treating that person like every other human being that I don't like.

Since were protecting peoples feelings, I demand a group to represent those of us who are being singled out for being mean or insensitive. We have rights too. Just like the retarded, handicapped, minorities, women, children, religious, non-religious, big business, small business, poor, rich, middle class, gay, straight, bi-sexual, trans-gender, and on and on and on.

Get over yourselves it is human nature to care more about yourself than those around you. You will get annoyed by someone who falls into one of the aforementioned categories and you will not be in the wrong for doing so. Merely human.

END RANT

My cousin has autism, bipolarism and a few other things and my aunt still cracks jokes, not at my cousin directly but in general. She has no problem calling someone a retard.

The meaning behind it is not there anymore. It's like calling someone a bastard, it doesn't have the meaning behind it that it once did.

  by: Orthiad   03/24/2009 03:23 PM

Any.

Evolution happens by mutations which naturally occur. But, if by those mutations and misguided compassion a crippled, suffering being was allowed to survive and indeed reproduce, nature has been defied, and responds by offering all such offspring the same terrible fate. Therefore, to get away from the whole reproduction tangent and back to my point, there is a real limit to how much social expense must be made to normalise the lives of such disabled people before we begin to be slaves of our own compassion towards the afflicted. How much health care does such a man need? Do we really need a "special olympics" to place those without natural capability in some equal category to those in any professional athletic competition, even though plainly their very disability is pure inequality? It's their business, of course, I just don't care to have society "upgraded" to serve those with limbs missing and synapses misfiring. You might as well fight god as fight evolution.

That is where I am going with my line of reasoning.
