Kristen Dellert and Tim Maikshilo, two dairy farmers in Vermont, US, have been able to reduce the amount of gas emissions their cows burp simply by changing their diet. Cow burps and other gassy, bodily functions contribute to global warming.
Dellert, Maikshilo and farmers on 15 other farms across the state feed cows a mix of flaxseed, alfalfa, and various other grasses containing high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids. The dairy industry is responsible for 2% of US greenhouse gas production.
The burps from cows are mostly to blame. The farmers are working with Stonyfield, on their Greener Cow Project. Traditionally, dairy cows are fed corn or soy feed.
