Girl, 16, Still Looks 6 Months Old; Baffles Doctors

16-year-old Brooke Greenberg has fascinated scientists with her inability to age past toddlerhood, possibly holding secrets to the process of aging. At only 30 inches and 16 pounds, she can't speak, wears diapers, and still has her baby teeth.

She's aged in some respects, such as her skeletal system, which is aged over 10 years. "There've been very minimal changes in Brooke's brain. Various parts of her body, rather than all being at the same stage, seem to be disconnected," said a doctor.

Many medical emergencies plagued her before turning 6 but would often simply go away without any explanation, such as a stroke, brain seizure, and a brain tumor that made her sleep 14 days. A small esophagus also requires the use of a feeding tube.

  Spare a thought for the child's parents...

Having an abnormal child is a nightmare without end for the parents. The hell they have to go through with every setback the kid has - and she has apparently had plenty of them.

The voice of compassion.

Yes you're absolutely right. It's a facinating condition but we have to look at the practical aspect. From what I understand, the Parents have been looking after a 6 month old baby for the last 16 years. That can't be easy :-/

Trevelyan - obviously you've never had kids... I'd kill myself if I had to change diapers for 16 years!

  Can they do the same puppies and kittens?

That would be the best! I would make millions selling my perma-puppies and perma-kittens!!!

On a serious note, what sort of mental level is she? Does she still act like a 6 month old?

  She ages like anyone else

what she doesn't ever do is develop. But one day she'll be a gray haired, wrinkled "toddler" and she won't live longer than any one else.

  by: H. W. Hutchins   06/26/2009 10:36 AM
  @HW Huthchins

How do you know that?

They say that her bones resemble those of a 10-year-old, she looks like a toddler and still has baby teeth - how can you possibly say that she will get wrinkles and grey hair then die at the same kind of age as the rest of us? Seriously, you have no way of knowing what will happen to her as she gets older.

  Oops, typo, sorry Hutchins

got your name wrong there!

*sits patiently waiting for an edit button to appear on SN*

@Tabby: Nah the comments in this site are too based around people's well or poorly thought banter to ever allow people to take a mulligan on something stupid said ; )

I'm not saying Hutchins is for sure correct, but I would agree with him. The child may not be "aging" in the aspect that causes people to mature, however, it's unlikely that she is immune to the chromosomal break down and average wear and tear that destroys our bodies slowly over time.

But that's just what I can guess basing off what I read.

I don't think anyone knows for sure how her telomeres behave, it would be an interesting thing to research. Is she also as vulnerable to the normal cumulative mutations throughout her life as everyone else is?

  by: caution2     06/26/2009 11:36 PM

I don't think I have ever laughed at a single comment this much here in shortnews in like 4 years.... thanks mate.

  think about it

if she grows old and gets gray hair and wrinkles the brain may not develop right and her sentences could be backwards she would be a real life yoda.

  by: vewdew   06/28/2009 06:39 AM
  @vewdew

That's assuming she ever learns to talk - she is still only capable of making baby sounds.

  by: TabbyCool     06/29/2009 02:16 PM

What a cop out. Disprove aging in any organism and it is you who will be in the news.
