Official Calls For Investigation Into Bush Misuse of Power

Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich) is calling for a criminal investigation that would be followed with a "9/11-type panel" into abuses of power by George W. Bush. Conyers announced plans this Friday while urging the Attorney General to help lead the probe.

Conyers, who is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, also seeks subpoenas for former White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolton and White House attorney Harriet Miers; Conyers claims that they hold useful information for the probe.

The president has resisted probes in to the Bush Administration alleged abuses stating that citizens should be "looking forward and not backwards."

Does it carry any real penalty?

or just a 'finding'?

I bet if they found "serious abuses" there would be some kind of punishment. The article didn't outline any kind of potential punishments, but I read something (from another source on the same subject) that stated that CONYERS wants a public-investigation instead of a congressional investigation so if the abuses were viewed as extremely bad by the public I'm sure there would be an outcry for punishment.

CONYERS went on to say that the probe and panel in to the Bush-era abuses would be to prevent future abuses by those in power.

The article listed some of the abuses as being "intentional misuse of intelligence"(intelligence on WMD's probably), improper method of interrogating prisoners, warrant less wiretaps, and retribution against critics, etc.

My opinion is Bush was in the wrong on a lot of things. Even his White House Spokesman wrote a book called "WHAT HAPPENED?" which detailed how they knowing lied and committed perjury. It went on to explain that Bush used intelligence that he knew was false for reasons to get into an IRAQ WAR. That makes me sick. Young people had to die for Bush's personal vendetta against a man that "tried to kill BUSH SENIOR".

He told the America People that Iraq harbored terrorist but I read articles of released information about how SADDAM wanted an alliance with AMERICA to help defend itself from IRAN. look into it.

SO much young blood had to be spilled in the of liberty so BUSH could act like tyrant. If we were liberating Iraq then why the HELL ARE WE STILL THERE!

That's a guy who's in Congress for all the right reasons. I have nothing but respect for him.

One thing that I love about the whole Iraq debate with Bush supporters is that they were right, in a way -- there were terrorists in Iraq. What they fail to mention is that those terrorists were working there to topple Saddam Hussein.

Another fun fact is that even the military now admits that the Bush administration's preoccupation with invading Iraq was a big reason we've still not caught bin Laden.

  How..

I would like to see him Rumfieled and Cheney locked up with the normal everyday prisoners, without protection, now that would be real justice.

He never wanted to catch Binladen, the Binladens have been friends with the Bush family since before the last would war, the sneaky cocky creeps have just took the pee out of all of us.

It makes me sick. A lot of people say that Bush is TOO POWERFUL and won't receive any punishment for the chaos he has brought to this nation. I think we need to punish him in order to have success in democracy. He needs to be punished as an explain that the AMERICAN TAXPAYERS will not supports abuses of intelligence for personal gain.

A lot of good people have died because they were fighting for what they believed to be the protection of AMERICAN CITIZENS. 8 years after the TWIN TOWERS fell and OSAMA BIN LADEN is still on the loose. After all those laws that BUSH put into place that robs American Citizens of their rights (PATRIOT ACT). It makes me sick. I only wish Obamas support was behind a probe and panel deal. Its funny we'll give some how uses marijuana for medical reasons time in prison but BUSH used AMERICA and the WORLD has his own personal STOMPING GROUND and he makes billions of stocks! Disgusting to say the least.

Time will tell whether Obama is the type of president who can be persuaded by public pressure, and whether the public can be bothered to pressure him. I'm hoping and praying it's a big YES to both questions, as it would mean a lot for our country.

Conyers won't do anything-He blocked Impeachment

Given Rep. Conyers stalling on impeachment for years he is unlikely to do anything on investigation or prosecution, even of the torturers,

UNLESS WE Raise Holy Hell If They Don't!!!!

I don't usually condone gay prison rape, but I would practically give anything to put Cheney and Rumsfeld in a CA state prison with a slippery bar of soap.

  It Just Occurred To Me

That George Bush is under permanent detention. He can not go anywhere without his guards ( security), He has to live behind bars ( A secure gated, guarded community)his every move is monitored, he can not leave the United States( He could be arrested and charged with war crimes). For all practical intents and purposes he is imprisoned.
