Vaccine Could Protect Bees From Colony Collapse Disorder

The Israeli company Beeologics has developed a vaccine that may solve the disturbing problem of Colony Collapse Disorder, in which entire bee populations have been wiped out across the world.

The drug, known as "Remembee," apparently helps bees overcome the IAVP virus, which scientific literature has associated with CCD and has been discovered in hives in Israel. Beeologics' CTO says the drug enhances a feature of bees' immune systems.

"We are really using a naturally occurring phenomenon," said the CTO, Nitzan Paldi. "It's not a pesticide and it's not toxic," he said. The US Dept. of Agriculture and FDA are working to certify Remembee for use in the U.S.

  We Need Our Bees

This virus may not be the only factor causing the colony colapse disorder.I hope the vaccine works or we will all be in big trouble soon. Bees are responsible for most of our food. If they are not around to do the polination we will have food shortages and the price of food will skyrocket. Our world we be very diffeent. In Austrailia they do not have this problem at all. It may be a sign that our genetic manipulation or toxins in the environment may have something to do with this also.

  Bee Cause

John,
You only have to give this to the queen bee. She produces 3000 eggs a day. Queen lives for 1-5 years, worker bees live about 45 days.

I live in a major honey producing -

area of Western Canada. My cousin who's yard was directly across the road from our farm is a bee keeper and as a teen I worked for him in the summer but didn't like the little beasts crawling up my nose inside the veil. Good work, they make good coin but this has really scared them. Over night - BOOM! Bees are all gone. As a society we must remember that bees polinate the plants that makes this ol' world a place we can live in and eat. Wheat for bread, barley for beer etc etc. I hope the vaccine works.

Beer....Mmmmmm...
