2010 World Population: 7 Billion

The global population is projected to reach 7 billion next year, with most growing coming from developing and/or poor regions including Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean, according to the Population Reference Bureau.

A co-author of the PRB's 2009 World Population Data Sheet said that nearly 90 percent of today's 1.2 billion young people are living in developing nations, and eight in 10 live either in Africa or Asia.

Most growth in the developed world will come from the U.S. and Canada, with equal parts of that coming from immigration and births minus deaths. India is poised to overtake China as the world's most populated country by 2050.

Anyway, I remember when it was about 4 billion back in the mid-70's.

  So what...

The earth could quite easily support 20 billion people, if we (humans) actually knew what we were doing and wasn’t so corrupt, greedy, and selfish.

We have got a situation where 80% of the world’s resources are consumed by 20% of the population.

It is seriously a case of the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and nobody really gives a shit nor does anything about it.

I try my best to educate myself and those around me and to be a good, kind human being, but when most of the world is asleep due to their own wilful ignorance and the others due to their conditions / situations; it’s hard to promote peace, love and understanding, very hard!

We let our leaders get away with murder (literally) and strip our freedoms/liberties away from us on a daily basis without even battering an eye lid.

Honestly... I am embarrassed to be human and part of this world sometimes.

When will we learn? Hopefully soon before it is too late, although call me pessimistic I really do not think we will, at least not any time soon.

Surely it could, and surely at that point there would be no nature, only factory farms and generic suburbs. I'm just saying...life won't get better that way.

Haha. You just made me think how disappointed people are going to be when, on December 12th, everything keeps going. And how hard I'm going to laugh. Sort of takes me back to December 31st 1999 =P

  A few thoughts

I didn't post this to alarm anyone or to suggest we need to control population growth, etc. I don't believe in artificial population control, though I do think it's a bit crazy for people to have more than three or four kids.

I think we can sustain 7 billion and probably twice that or even more if we get smarter about our consumption of resources. Adjustments will have to be made, but it might not be so bad if, for example, there's not as much meat to go around and people eat more vegetables.

I really just posted this because of the milestone. Seven billion is a lot. : )

'I don't believe in artificial population control'
Do you mean birth control pills?

  by: John E Angel     08/12/2009 11:48 PM
  Personally

I'm in favour of population control. If nothing else, our standard of living will be greater if there are less of us. Humans are also pretty territorial (hence all the wars) so expanding population of any nation is going to cause problems on an international level if it gets out of control. On a more local level, we can already see the anti-social behaviour effects that come from cramming people into cities in vast high rise towers with no outside space, there's bound to be friction as everyone is so tightly packed in.

It may just be the way my brain works but I want my own space, a garden, a drive way and a bit of peace and quiet for 'me time'. That sort of thing will become less and less possible as the population grows.

Then we'll move on to more practical issues such as food and water supply, not to mention our 'carbon footprints'. It's all very well cutting our own footprint by X% but when you go and add X billion more little feet, you're back where you started or worse. That said, M4CRO_ is probably correct in saying the planet could technically support more people.

Personally, I'd prefer to take a better quality of life over a higher quantity of life.

I'm going to laugh my ass off on both dates then. After all, they'll be much of the same day in my world =P Get up, go to work, come back home.

Other people will be sitting in shelters with canned food, I'm sure. But that's just ... just... silly.

  Erm..

...there was a report in 2007 that said that the world would hit 7 billion in 2008.

I can't find the link at the moment, but I remember it very well. I'll keep looking.

Statistics and estimations really don't mean much any more. It's just people getting paid to say whatever pops into their heads.

  I read this study...

where they found people have less babies in urban environments... so we'll reach a point eventually where the populations in urban centers vrs elsewhere will be more or less they same and the earths population will start to hold steady...

I will try to find the link.

  Oh really ?

The world could easily accomodate 20 billion people ?

Sorry but you are being mislead by propoganda, in fact in order to have a world that can currently sustain even six billion, we would need a planet six times larger than the planet Earth, to allow everyone to have an average lifestyle of a Western European, simply from resources alone.

If we wanted a planet that can sustain future generations we would need a planet 12 times larger than that, don't you ever read the side of the Bio Yogurt pots, ?

The reality is that in standard living terms we can not sustain a decent standard of living, with a world population above 1.5 billion, read your yogurt pots, honestly....

thats just plain bullshit... you'd fit in well with the new world order crowd.

we produce more than enough resourses for everyone MANY times over...

the big problem is we waste and in some case outright destroy our own resources in the west to artifically keep prices high.

in MOST case we just simply choose not to produce enough for the whole world, this is called "artifical scarcity".

there is absolutely no good reason for why even a single person goes hungery or dying of thirst for even a single day.

again the problem is us uin the west... being only a small part of the world yet using most of its produced resources... not for any good reason... just because they can.

take instance enrgy production there is no GOOD reason why we don't have green power built into EVERY building... there is no good reason why we still have massive coal mining operation for energy production (and by result no reason for its pollution either), there is no good reason we're still drilling oil all over the world for the purposes of energy... instead they good it because they can.

take wastes of land for example... like golf course... they using up SOOOO much drinking water and land that person i think they ought to be banned or atleast limited heavily to only so many in a geographic region.

take food for axample our goverments actually pay farmers to destroy their crops to artifically keep market price up, goverments have mass culling of cows over even a SUSPECTED case of mad cow rather than test all the cows individually of farm by farm if their only very small farms, the reason for this isn't public safety, its artificial scarcity, if public safety was the concern they simply have more inspectors. likewise this swine flu outbreak is causing many countries to consider culling pigs which will do exactly the same thing; create artifical scarcity. and they did the same thing already to chicken when the avian flu broke out.

you take deserts for example... WE made many of them throughout our history by deforestation, over use of soil (or more accuratelly poor crop practice; lack of crop rotation).

if you think the world can only support 1.5 billion with out kind of lifstyle... your just plain ignorant... thats a lie from the globalists (which have been running almost all if not all western countries for decades, argueably centuries) to justify wasting as much land and resources as we do, while at the same time depriving those resources from the rest of the world... creating a world where MOST of the world's population is in a level of poverty that most westerns can't even imagine.

  Dear havoc 666

Sadly this discussion will go no further, because I have always felt that if someone uses insults they are almost certainly to be unable to reason or listen to reasoning at any stage of the debate.

As to your reply to my mailing, I will say that you may please yourself by calling me ignorant and displaying your political attitude for all to see, but an attitude is not a reason, nor an argument for a position, nor am I going to waste my time trying to convince you that you are not qualified to judge what my politics or my position on any so called new world order is, but if you really think that on a world that floats in space we are going to replace all we have taken from her in order to fill the needs of another few billion or ( even more ), human beings, when it takes nature 200,000 years to create a hillside full of earth and we can destroy what nature has created in a few seconds, by using a spade on it, man by his manner of living has become a force of nature like erosion by wind or water, and at present mankind is causing more erosion and loss of habitat, than wind water, volcanoes, tidal waves, high or low temperatures combined, and if we go on doing so, we well damage all our future generations. You can take the right wing view that we can solve it all with our genius, but I have lived long enough to know that is not true, simply from looking around at what has happened to the world, during my lifespan, I suspect youth on your part, and even if this is not so, then arrogance, your own and on behalf of humanity, I for one think that we and our solutions are very much overated, and in time, you too will come to know it as well, so I will let life get through to you, because reason can not..and I simply feel that if you are the prevailing attitude in this world, then it is already far too late, for all of us......

I also don't believe much in your position on conspiracy stories of world destruction in order to maintain food prices it smacks of the loony fringe reports at the end of the late news, when they feel we have to be given something to laugh at, before they sign off for the night, it really is loose stool water, arse gravy of the worst kind....

``Sadly this discussion will go no further, because I have always felt that if someone uses insults they are almost certainly to be unable to reason or listen to reasoning at any stage of the debate.``

if you think the owrld can only sustain 1.5 billion people that IS ignorant... not an insult... just a legitiment observation... like it or not.

as for the bulk of your message thats only as a result of the the ignorance, greed, and malicious in many aspects of humanity, and esspecially the worship of the economy, holding it higher than nature itself, for without which there wouldn`t be an economy in the first place.

``You can take the right wing view that we can solve it all with our genius, but I have lived long enough to know that is not true, simply from looking around at what has happened to the world, during my lifespan,``

and yet in your lifetime nor anyone else that is alive today has never taken a truely conservative approach to resource management... instead you have the same level of resource managaement we had when the population was much less than even a third of what it is now... again thats not a lacking of nature, thats a lacking on humanity`s part.... and only because it advantageous to the few (the elite) to do so, NOT because nature is being stretched thin... which it is in some parts but again ONLY from lack of resource managaement.. NOT from a lack of resources.

``I suspect youth on your part, and even if this is not so, then arrogance,``

i am youthful... technically, being only 24, and evidently wise beyond your years... or perhaps you`ve just given up on intellectual pursuits or just thinking of ways to solve the world resource problems without re-enforcing the beleif of the people associated with what has become known as ``the new world order`` what the world population should be cut dramitically... infact you cited their ``liberal`` number at roughly 75-80% of the world populations whihc is roughly 1.5 billion... the hardliners what it cut as far as 50-500 million and actually have it written it stone.

``I for one think that we and our solutions are very much overated, and in time, you too will come to know it as well,```

oh, i hope not... we just REFUSE to implement good ideas because they aren`t as profitable as perpetual dependance... and if even become intellectually an old man and give up caring about the world`s problems (or an intellectual adolescent; such people simply don`t care the world`s problems, and refuse to think about the things in life that actually matter that aren`t indiviually subjective) i will know i`m no longer worthy of life.

``so I will let life get through to you, because reason can not..``

sure, reason can... ignorance, not so much... and i gave PLENTY of reason which you didn`t even dare comment on.

``I also don't believe much in your position on conspiracy stories of world destruction in order to maintain food prices it smacks of the loony fringe reports at the end of the late news``

LMAO, i didn`t say that did that, did i... i said they destroy crops and livestock to keep food prices up AND THEY DO... ask around, read some news on the subject... open your eyes and purge that ignorance.

``when they feel we have to be given something to laugh at, before they sign off for the night, it really is loose stool water, arse gravy of the worst kind....``

you keep thinking that, i find it very hard to take people seriously as intellectuals when they live in deep-seeded ignorance...

the only thing holding us back as a race in any way is us... not nature... we have way more than enough resources... i`m all for colonizing space for more living room and resources for us... but were still a long way off from actually needing to do that for resource shortage, instead we only have to manage our resources better and not waste them as we have been basically since we discovered better ways of making electricity, which we have had for well over a century and that technology is still suppressed even to this day.... again the problem is us not nature.

i agree we are out of blanace with nature but not because of our population but because of our actions which can only be consider thoughtless or careless, and extreme-greed oriented...

so you go ahead and laugh at intellectual reasoning (which again you never even touched, probably because you have no valid arguement against them)... just know that people like me are laughing back at you (and shaking or heads at the same time in bemusement of such sheer ignorance as suggesting something like earth only being able to support 1.5 billion people to a `western lifestyle`).

I have asked these questions, myself, and solved them to my satisfaction not by a student based, pizza loving view of mankind, trust me, even you will one day learn that when you call someone ignorant when you simply do not agree with them you are not adding to any reasoned argument, but merely being insulting to them because you do not like the point of view expressed.

As to not addressing your points, a little research would demonstrate to even you, that some of your premises are patently absurd, and baseless and as such not even worth addressing.

I also suspect you believe in the IMF being behind most of the world order you speak of, and various Swiss based political groups, how I envy you and your ability to hold such contradictory and opposing views in one head and not bother with facts, only the young can be so flexible.

But now young man, I am going to bed as I have flight to catch to Zurich tomorrow, for a visit to The United Overseas Bank , 11 Quai des Berges, Geneve, Switzerland, sorry if this offends your view of how this world ought to be, but some of us just have to work without you and your help. Bye
