Cat Gives Birth To Polydactyl Kittens

An Ohio woman found out that her cat had given birth to some unusual kittens. Two of them have six toes on their back paws and one has seven toes on its front paw.

Karen Fulton was in bed when her son come in to say that he saw six toes on the kittens. After having him bring her one of them, she checked the rest to see that they too had more toes than they are supposed to.

Cats which are polydactylous have special abilities other cats do not, such as catching items with just one paw or in some cases opening certain latches.
Fulton has not said whether she will keep the cats or put them up for adoption.

Not as strange as you might think

I was told recently that they had traced the origins of the six toed cat in America back to England. You could hardly notice on Alan, a black and white six toed cat we recently looked after that his feet were any difference from a normal cat. Maybe slightly bigger paws ;)

  Bigger Paws

That is a neat bit of information. I wonder if my Maine Coon will let me hold her long enough to check out her paws, I swear they are bigger than a poodles easily.

  Yeah....

Polydactyl cats aren't that rare. See at least one every month at work. Most people just don't notice it as they don't sit there and check their cat's paws.

I'm intrigued by the claims about catching with one paw and opening latches, and where such evidence comes from, considering the majority of non-polydactyl cats can do those things too.

  My

father has a poly cat, 6 toes on each paw now.

The cat is very self concious about his paws, he will not let anyone touch them without a struggle. It's cool to watch him use his front paws as hands.

He picks up his food with a paw and often cups his "hand" to use as a small water cup at the sink.

I read the title as 'pterodactyl kittens' and I was thinking this was the biggest miracle since Mary had a little lamb. I'm tired. *sigh*

  Wow A lot of replies

I see there really are more than just a rare few here and there. That or we have some of the rarest people on here.

ixuzus- I can see how that would happen.

ub3rtristan- I am so sorry :-(

  sometimes...

there are VERY polydactyl cats. Cats with 6 toes are not rare at all. However, certain breeds like Maine Coons have genetic flaws which can sometimes cause a high number of extra toes. My cat, X, (yes, his name is really X), has 11 extra toes, no word of a lie. His front paws have 3 extra toes EACH, one back paw has 3 extra, and one has 2 extra. his paws are ENORMOUS. When standing next to my other cat, who is "normal", he looks like a mutant.

My Maine Coon has large paws also. When you look at her she seems so small until she stretches out and those paws come out. She is a rescue and when she was a kitten she was horribly beaten and she still does not like to be picked up at all. I would love to get a look at her paws, but I am more concerned with what they would do to me if she was to scratch me. lol

Funny enough my Maine Coon was also a rescue. We found him covered in ticks, with horrible mats in his fur, and nearly starved... he quite literally followed me home one day. He is HUGE, even for a Maine Coon- makes me other cat (who is of average size) look like a midget. Is your cat a Black/White coloration? Apparently the black/white Maine Coons are much more prone to having ridiculous numbers of extra toes because of poor genetic history.

She is really small for a Maine Coon, just about the same size of my other cats. She has this wonderful grey and peach mixture that I have only seen once before and that was on a tabby I had growing up. The closest I can get to her paws is when I am brushing her but as soon as I go near them she will take off. My husband teases me because she has adopted me and follows me everywhere that I go, even will follow me into the latrine. I call her mama's baby Emmie because she is such a spoiled furball.

That would make the odds greater for sure. I think you are lucky to work with animals all day, oh and the pets too. ;-)

Everytime we go to the Humane Society I usually am wanting to bring someone else home. We won't because we are at the limit I am willing to deal with on a daily basis, but my heart aches for all of the animals there.

I thought about becoming a volunteer down there but I wouldn't be able to do much of anything with my weight restrictions and all the other ones. I did offer to help them at the next pet fair because all I will have to do is talk and help them fill out adoption papers and such.

I need to get out more. The summer is pretty much over up here and I feel like I have cabin fever 7-8 weeks before the s-sn-sno-snow is here!!

  a neighborhood cat

Where I live has six toes or fingers or whatever on its front paws. I guess its my cat. It just kind of decided it likes my house and always hangs out on my porch. I think it might've been my place's previous owners' cat or something. Its really nice.

  they are very common

I knew a lady in north Mississippi that had a dozen or more cats with extra toes.she had so many I thought it was common like a short leg or short eared cat.

I like cats. I really do. They're easy to take care and quite entertaining. I consider myself a cat person.

I'm a little concerned about how many of the people I consider reasonably intelligent are spending their down time counting cat toes though.
