The U.S. is the Most Admired Country in the World Thanks to President Obama

The latest polling from the Nation Brand Index, which measures the global image of 50 countries every year, finds that the United States has shot into the No. 1 spot from being in seventh place last year.

The leap in popularity is largely because of President Obama's star power, the poll revealed. "In all my years studying national reputation, I have never seen any country experience such a dramatic change in its standing," said NBI's founder.

The biggest drop on the index was suffered by Canada, which fell from fourth place to seventh place, while China was able to climb to 22nd place largely because of the Olympics. In 50th place was Iran.

I knew it was you too Ben. I also guessed one of the 3 first to respond. I am glad to see that others are showing faith in Obama and the US once again.

Just think between the President being Obama and Bush being out of office I figured we would have busted into the top 5 and we went even farther.

Now we need to continue on a positive direction because star power never lasts for that long.

its just a novel reaction and will wear/tapper off

remember bush was also VERY popular at this point in his presidency... esspecially domestically.

also this is highly dubious considering the crieria for this ranking:

"People: Measures the population's reputation for competence, education, openness and friendliness and other qualities, as well as perceived levels of potential hostility and discrimination.

Governance: Measures public opinion regarding the level of national government competency and fairness and describes individuals' beliefs about each country's government, as well as its perceived commitment to global issues such as democracy, justice, poverty and the environment.

Exports: Determines the public's image of products and services from each country and the extent to which consumers proactively seek or avoid products from each country-of-origin.

Tourism: Captures the level of interest in visiting a country and the draw of natural and man-made tourist attractions.

Culture & Heritage: Reveals global perceptions of each nation's heritage and appreciation for its contemporary culture, including film, music, art, sport and literature.

Investment & Immigration Determines the power to attract people to live, work or study in each country and reveals how people perceive a country's economic and social situation"

so how did america take 1st?... yet another mystery of statistics manipulation.

It is all a conspiracy because "we" knew you would see the results and know that "they" are really watching you.

Seriously, unlike what so many would believe we are very friendly to those that are visiting the country and we do have a few of the best colleges in the world.

We also have products that are not only popular all over the world, many people do see out the Made In America label because the people here do good quality work for the most part.

We also have many beautiful places to vist and if one was to stay for a few weeks and hit all the different parts of the country like New England, the Midwest, the South, Southwest and West Coast you can find almost any type of weather you would want to and many fantastic and famous attractions.

We also have some of the most famous people living here in many of the sections requirements such as movie stars, musicians, artists, of course our sports and there is many fine authors living here.

"Investment & Immigration Determines the power to attract people to live, work or study in each country and reveals how people perceive a country's economic and social situation"
This is a no brainer, we still have so many people that want to move here that they are coming over illegally, some are not leaving after their Study Visa's expire and even with so many people saying we are so horrible we are still one of the places most people want to live.

How did we get #1? I don't know, I do know however we belong in the top 5 and even the hate of the US that you have won't stop many others from thinking otherwise.

I honestly think this is the most beautiful continent ever. NORTH AMERICA that is.

People on the other hand are exactly the same every where else in the World. They all want the same things.

Politically AMERICA suxxxxxxxxxxxx.

"Seriously, unlike what so many would believe we are very friendly to those that are visiting the country and we do have a few of the best colleges in the world."

well friendly anyways for the most part, i'd hardly go so as to add very because by comparison canada is more friendly and their are certtianly places better than here so starting with very friendly would be overkill i mean how would you go higher than "very friendly"... i've been there, both as a kid and as an adult, and almost married an american; a southern (north carolina), no less.

and yes some of the world's best colleges (and university are in the US, but their education level has been on a perpetual downward spiral (as has canada's for at least 30 years, apparently things were better before then, all i have is my father's old highschool textbooks as proof of this, which were contructed in a much more intellually friendly manner with very little filler.

"We also have products that are not only popular all over the world, many people do see out the Made In America label because the people here do good quality work for the most part."

yeah medical and military technology (which much of which in both cases is originally derived from nazi technology/practices)... everything else has again completely gone downhill in again the last 30 years... "made in america" to me means the same as "made in china"... it means made cheaply by people who don't take pride in their work (most people and countries on average don't) the only difference is the price.

"We also have many beautiful places to vist "

indeed like the mountains in north carolina... but there wasn't too many people there to ruin the experience, just me and my ex-fiance.... the other place i went (though this was when i was akid) was new york state to darian lake... the state was kind of dumpy from what i remeber (this was back in the early to mid 90's) i was 7-9 years old i think so its probably not the most reliable of memories...

i don't dispute the nature beauty that america has, which has been and is still largely being destroyed (as is true for many countries).

"We also have some of the most famous people living here in many of the sections requirements such as movie stars, musicians, artists, of course our sports and there is many fine authors living here."

just don't take credit for our great canadians that have helped make that go get there (wayne gretsky, mike myers, jim carry, shania twain, keanu reeves, also our scientists for the last 60 years many of whom were on the ground floor of NASA after politics got in the way of Avero and the Arrow and doctors... and the europeans too (the beatles, pink floyd, at least 200 mainstream actors/actresses).

if the US stands so tall its only because they stand on the back of others, if anything they stand on the backs of other better then anyone else.

"This is a no brainer, we still have so many people that want to move here that they are coming over illegally, some are not leaving after their Study Visa's expire and even with so many people saying we are so horrible we are still one of the places most people want to live."

LMAO and how many people are leaving norway for the US... of course people are going to leave a much worse country for a slightly better one... usually becasue they are too far from or can't get into, or aren;t aware of better countries.

of course typically if your looking for work america does have more opportunity, typically as result of the greed driven culture.

"How did we get #1? I don't know, I do know however we belong in the top 5 and even the hate of the US that you have won't stop many others from thinking otherwise."

how about a short list of better countries...

norway
switerland
finland
iceland
germany
france
canada

by this logic the US shouldn't even be in the top 5.

i do have hate (contempt) for america... and america earned every bit of it. even if americans can't remember why their country earned it... its far from an irrational hatred.

  we are popular because

our congress allows open borders and provides free benifits and services to illegals and not it's own citizens. and obama in egypt saying we are a muslim country helped a lot also.

  Shannon, Havoc

Ok between you havoc and your cosntant complaints. Sorry Canada didn't make it up and dropped a little, maybe the Americans that come and visit didn't feel much welcomed or they saw some of your anti-US postings and decided not to got.
Also many American made products are of very good quality, I won't give you a list but look up the show Made In America with John Ratzenburg you might actually like it and learn a few things.

Now Shannon- Give it up already, this is like fighting twins that were seperated at birth and raised at the opposite end of the spectrum. Shannon Obama did NOT say we were a muslim country to Egypt and for the last damn time Obama isn't a Muslim, he is a Christian. Also there will be no free care for illegal immigrants on the health care bill. If you want to bitch about California giving free medical to illegal immigrants you can thank your REPUBLICAN Governor not your Democrat President.

Havoc again real quick, Hatred is not a good thing to have and it is beyond silly to hate people in a country that had no part in what many of ancestors have done. What was done to the Indians, the slaves, the Japanese during WW2 were horrible things I do not deny any of that. Most of the citizens alive now wasn't born for any of it or had anything to do with it. With people having a never ending blind hate towards a country it is no wonder why so many people just give up trying to be decent to others.

Tara, he won't listen to the truth. Lies are easier for him to believe than the truth. That's the way a lot of right-wingers are. Nobody can change them. It must be in their DNA to be gullible and fall for any lie Beck and Limbaugh tell them.

"Sorry Canada didn't make it up and dropped a little, "

oh i don't care about that i don't have any great sense of nation pride my only "pride" is that i wasn't born somewhere worse....i consider myself a global citizen no allegiance to any country.

"or they saw some of your anti-US postings and decided not to got."

you give me too much credit... don't let it go to my head... LOL

and its not as if what i say isn't based on fact its just not popular... but truth is rarely ever popular.

"Also many American made products are of very good quality, I won't give you a list but look up the show Made In America with John Ratzenburg you might actually like it and learn a few things."

your talking to someone who has a perfectly working (then high-end) computer entirely made from chinese made and aseembled parts... even the speakers... the same system made in america cost 50-100% more, yet is of no better quality...

infact more often than not is american, canadian and mexican products that break... the only good thing is we have much better warrenty policy... credit where its due.

but if you think made in america still means quality, your easily fooled in the 50's and 60's yeah american made meant made to last... but that has NEVER held true in my lifetime (i'm only in the mid 20's)

"Hatred is not a good thing to have"

if it not based on logic yes i agree if it is, than i can't disagree more, becasue then not only is it natural but justified. for instance it not logical to hate a persone for being of a different skin color, nationality, or religion, but if someone attacks, or oppresses it is logical and deserved.

"and it is beyond silly to hate people in a country that had no part in what many of ancestors have done."

i don't i hate the people that actually do it and allow it, its in your history, its in your present and it WILL be in your future,... the things i hate are engrained into your culture, like war... war is almost a normal thing for the US their the israel of the west, with longer history of aggreesion and greed, which is a particularly bad combination.

"What was done to the Indians, the slaves, the Japanese during WW2 were horrible things I do not deny any of that. Most of the citizens alive now wasn't born for any of it or had anything to do with it. With people having a never ending blind hate towards a country it is no wonder why so many people just give up trying to be decent to others."

no but the fact that those same action STILL go on today to other country's people only validates holding history against them because america hasn't learned from history; much their own history... constantly repeating all the same mistakes and crimes against humanity. if theyr were a small isolated country i wouldn't care so much but the US is too big and powerful to be ignored and their misdeeds must be confronted not ignored because "they've already happened",hell americans are already taking that like with iraq and its only been about 6 and half years since that started and it still hasn't ended.

at some point people just realize its its america's nature to be like that.... they could change,... but will they?, i don't see it happening... i see things quite easily getting worse, quite possibly until the US collapses like the soviet union, but then some other country will just take their place in all likihood, and at this rate the next in line is china... i can only hope china will do better as the major global influence than the US did, but in all likelihood they will end up just like the US, just with a much higher population.

With so many great countries in the world, some of you people are having a hard time taking your focus off of America. What gives?

Isn't it weird that we have ONE life to live, this one chance, and someone wants to spend it talking about how crap America is or is not?

I wish some of you pro-choicers were aborted, so someone worth the air they breath could have been brought into this world. Was that too harsh?

Now what I meant to say...

Is, Manny, I agree with you.

  by: Dayron   10/09/2009 09:25 AM
  Really?

I'm an American and most of the people's opinion about America overseas is that it is full of ignorant, fat, ethnocentric, untraveled people. For the most part, I would have to agree.
While in the US a lot of people thought that Cambodia was in Africa. I wore a tshirt with Chairman Mao's picture on it and his name underneath his picture and I met ONE person the entire time who knew who he was.
TaraB made some good points about some of the good thigns about the US, but one of the major problems is the level of education is pretty crap, and the country has tons of ignorant people.
Maybe it just seems that way though because I'm from FL (I didn't want to admit it, but it is true...born in TX but from FL)
I usually go back to the US once every 4 or 5 years, and every time I do, I'm always baffled at how ignorant the average American is. Ignorant and yet proud to be an American. As the late great George Carlin said, pride should be reserved for something YOU accomplished, not something that you had no control over, like your genetic disposition, or the country in which you were born, or the color of your skin. Next time someone says, "proud to be an American" reply, "proud to be 5'6" And everyone is stroking each other in the United Strokes of America.

Thank you very much.

I know that the US is not the secret to world peace and happiness, but there many things in this country we can appreciate.

There are things that need to be done soon or we will be facing even more job losses both now and in the future. Our educational system needs a total overhaul and specific wants and how to get the funding for NCLB.

I am too tired to get into all my thoughts on changing the way it is being ran but I wanted to thank you and explain that the US is far from perfect and yet each country has things that makes them just as 'bad' as us in many ways.

you really have a chip on your shoulder about America, don't you? We all know it's not perfect but you're cherry picking a bit. Your contribution of Shania Twain does not prop up our culture, and Darien Lake being rundown in your opinion does not undermine the overall beauty of our natural areas. I'm sorry but you seem to have this inferiority complex that many Canadians have. Not that there is anything wrong with Canada, far from it, but your country just does not register with most people. In a word, it's boring. I used to live only a half hour a way from Canada but we never bothered to go up there.

He has to have the deep seeded hate for the US or he will have nothing else to complain about. I have several good friends that live in Canada and I can thankfully say they don't act like he does and they actually like the States. With a few exceptions that I have seen from about 4 people on this site, I think the 2 countries that have the nicest people outside of the US is Canada and Australia.

I just remind myself that he or the other few are the minority and not the majority.

Yes it was too harsh. By a long way. It was also randomly irrelevant. What the hell has someone's stance on abortion got to do with this topic? And who are you to tell people, or to judge, what topics of conversation or debate are valid and worthwhile?
I really don't get the mentality that people like you have. If you don't want to talk about a certain subject or you see it as a waste of your time then simply don't join the conversation! You could at least be humble enough to accept that your interests do not trump all and that people have every right to discuss something regardless of whether you find it interesting or not.

I'm actually quite disturbed that no-one else here seems to have a problem with what you said. But nevermind.

How in the hell did a summary on the US being top spot in a poll get to be about pro-choicers being aborted?

Manny and you could be correct that this is filler news and that there are more important things to discuss, but no one made either of you open the link to the summary, read it or reply to it. Maybe some filler on occasion is what we all need to take our minds off more serious issues.

"you really have a chip on your shoulder about America, don't you?"

yeah i guess i do, its called intolerance of ignorance.

"We all know it's not perfect but you're cherry picking a bit."

not really... just stating facts... as unpopular as they may be.

"Your contribution of Shania Twain does not prop up our culture,"

no but when you take into account the whole of the listy and all the ones i missed it really does enhance your culture... to deny that is well ignorant.. look at some of the best movies and music to come out of america and realize may time they aren't even americans, enhance and yes on the whole propping up your culture.

"and Darien Lake being rundown in your opinion does not undermine the overall beauty of our natural areas."

it was the state that was dumpy as i recall... not necessarilly darien lake.... and i take nothing away from the natural beauty of north america... i have given credit where due... but i don't neglect critism where due either even if its an unpopular criticism.

"I'm sorry but you seem to have this inferiority complex that many Canadians have."

LMAO... yeah... and i'm just such a typical canadian... not being patriotic... not liking the corruption, exploitation or warmongering of our allies (or our own government for that matter)... yep typical... LMAO.

the only complex i have is a hatred of ignorance, malice, stupidity, exploitation, oppression... its not really any great mystery why i'm perpetually at odds with the US and thusly many americans as a result. and i really couldn't give a rats ass if people can't handle the truth bout america, i wont ignore all thats wrong with american (and the rest of the world for that matter) just because it might hurt some feelings of people too weak to handle the criticism, and most always unable to refute it... but still fully capable of just ignoring it.

"Not that there is anything wrong with Canada, far from it, but your country just does not register with most people. In a word, it's boring. I used to live only a half hour a way from Canada but we never bothered to go up there."

you don't know what your missing... we got great weed, stronger beer (though i perfer german beer, they make it right; STRONG)... and the people are ok i guess, certianly in terms of violence and probably crime in general, (we still have our nutballs too, like that guy that decapitated some other guy on a go/greyhound bus) though i'm not much of a people person, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or any such groupings.

and religion is less fanatical and widespread here... always a bonus for a few reasons, non-religious people *tend* to be more intelligent (atleast in IQ score) and less ignorant, religion was, is and will likely continue to be the fuel if not the source of many violent acts, social conflicts and even medical/technological conflicts (this is probably why america isn't as progressive as canada and other western countries.

@taraB

"He has to have the deep seeded hate for the US or he will have nothing else to complain about."

LOL, like i don't tear a new one into the global warming deniers, evolution deniers, zionist supporters, warmongerers (regardless of nation), people that hold the economy above humanity or the environment, trolls, people what hold their national leaders up as infalliable "god"-like figures as some have done to obama, as some did for bush and as many still do for reagan, people that are ignorant of the world, politics, economics ect,

"I have several good friends that live in Canada and I can thankfully say they don't act like he does and they actually like the States"

lol.. i don't even know any canadians that like the US... i mean other than for shopping... i mean they don't actually like the people, culture, economic, politics or their history (the US has had a particularly negative effect on canada, esspecially economically for the last 60 years starting with the politics that dismantled our military aviation industry (avero), then destroyed our agriculture with free trade... try talking to people that ACTUALLY know about the two countries rather than just living there like most people do... most people are perfectly content with ignorance.

"I just remind myself that he or the other few are the minority and not the majority."

as mark twain said "when you find yourside on the side of the majority its time to pause and reflect"

historically the majority is rarely right, thats one of the reasons we have experts of every imaginable feild, because most layman are simply too stupid or ignorant or even lazy to think about "complex" things.

i'd far rather be right and in the minority than wrong and in the majority.

and i couldn't give a shit less about popularity, even back in my school days this held true, i'll leave that for the ignoramous' that would rather be popular (or inline with their opinions with their country/religion ect.) than right

  HA!

lol deadzone. Does that make you feel good? The fact that you can broadcast personal information like that? Make you feel empowered?
Well sadly for you it just makes the rest of us believe you to be a petty minded little brat that has to resort to cheap tricks because he/she cannot string a coherent counter arguement together.

People like you make me sick.

  Anyway...

back to the topic. Have to say I was a little confused by this outcome. I dont have very much against the US these days but in Scotland I think my opinion would be the exception not the rule. But then again the Scots don't like anyone....

  @deadzone

was there a point to that?, are you trying to hurt my feelings or breach my privacy by stating my name, gender, location, age and handle? I PUT THAT THERE, its not like you've had a revalation about me or anything, its nothing everyone here can see for themselves; if they had the inclination to... so do you feel important yet?, feel like part of the dicussion? no, well try again, or don't if you can't add an intellectual comment/response.

oh BTW, you know what your profile??? NOTHING...lol

infact, more-over you JUST joined within the last 16 hours, so you must have joined just to make that irrelevent post... what an accomplishment...lol

  Well

It is a good thing in it's own right, but who really gives a rats ass?
We have more to worry about then being admired. Lets face it, if this administration doesn't start addressing the issue's of this country with a concrete plan, there won't be anything left to admire.

This is not an attack on you. Just throwing some things out there.

Most of the Canadians I have had working for me are equally as ignorant as my American employees. The difference between them was that the Canadians were honest about their ignorance where as Americans were very defensive about it. My Ozzies and Kiwis have been more knowledgeable than my American and Canadian employees. But that is just a small sampling from a large whole.

If you're going to hate ignorance and ignorant people (and be intolerant of them), you will be hating a lot of people your whole life. The world is full of ignorant sheep.

Also the greatest living intellectual is American-Noam Chomsky. If you've never read his stuff read some of his articles http://www.chomsky.info
I think you'd really enjoy his stuff. (Don't bother reading his stuff on linguistics unless you're into that, check out his writings on America and American involvement in foreign countries. It'll give you lots of ammo for America bashing. But he says things that Americans need to hear and accept.

One reason he won "The Nobel Peace Prize."

That is not so, unless he accomplished this in his first couple of weeks in office. Nice try though.
