An Arab newspaper has reported that Saddam Hussein is thinking about retiring as President of Iraq, and could do so as soon as September. He would hand over power to his younger son Qusay.
The paper said that handing over power to his son would mean the end of sanctions against the country. However most people are sceptical about the report, particularly as Saddam would retain "an honorary post" in government.
However the removal of Saddam from his post was never on the list of reasons for lifting UN sanctions on the country, so it would probably not occur.
