Iraq Wants Nuclear Reactors

Almost 19 years after British and US jets destroyed Saddam Hussein's dreams of making Iraq nuclear power the Iraqi government is lobbying the International Atomic Energy Agency to rebuild the reactors.

According to British daily "The Guardian", Iraq is trying to find a way around the ban on the country becoming a nuclear power allowing it to build a reactor which would be used at first for research purposes.

Iraqi science and technology minister, Raid Fahmi, told the paper "After the dissolution [of the regime] we did not have an industry, but we have become more and more conscious of the need for nuclear technology.”

  Hahahahahah
way to go ARABS. You have every right to possess this technology, as long as others have it. Next time they will think twice of bombarding you with "WMD" rhetorics.

"Saddam Hussein´s dreams of making Iraq nuclear power"

Nice wording, Hugo. It sounds as though you have much sympathy for the man...

  Any surprise?
If the US wanted to totally control that country it should have declared it a colony and had done with it. While nuclear powers exist in the world, all countries will want to have the same level of weaponry. After all, Britain won´t get rid of Trident because "everyone else has them", can it really be expected of any other country to do similar?

Think of it as trying to stop a country from using internal combustion engines to move, planes to fly, radio in radar stations, or _insert well known technology here_ ... any other piece of technology now commonly known.

it´s simple really, nuclear technology (either civil or military) has been around for sufficient time that any country* willing to venture into the field can do so.

* Country, or a big organization/company.

The only thing holding (some of) them back is the IAEA.

Even ´secret´ scientific knowledge like this, eventually becomes commonly known.

if you look close enough, some of the countries that aren´t nuclear armed (nor have any nuclear power reactors) do have small nuclear reactors in a university or otherwise a research facility, too small to be used for anything other than research. If/when they decide they want to venture into using it to produce power, they sure as hell will*.

* Here´s a thought: instead of stopping them, help them to do it safely!

Why is it strange that once this knowledge becomes commonplace, people desire to use it?

It´s only logical.

It may be dangerous, especially in some parts of the world (*hint* iraq *hint*), but no matter how much we try to hold them back they eventually will master & use the technology.

Wonder they hate our freedom. Freedom that we impose, Freedom of whom can have and who shall not have. WE have the freedom of chosing whom to give it to and when to keep silence.

Nuclear in it´s all glory, is volatile even maintaining it. Many Israeli scientist regret having these stockpiles in their own backyard.

There are Israeli scientist, who have been bullied, muzzled and some believed to be killed, to keep quite.

What they are saying is that Israel is a melting pot waiting for another Chernobyl to happen.
