Bruce Bukiet, a math professor at NJIT, has calculated the Yankees as having a 70% chance of winning the World Series against the Phillies, with the most probable event being the Yankees winning in six games at a 23% probability.
The Phillies have a mere 30% chance of winning, with the most likely scenario of them winning in seven games, at a 10% probability. Bukiet uses the 2009 season statistics for each player on a team's roster to make his predictions.
Bukiet makes such predictions annually, combining his love of the game and his passion for math and teaching. "Baseball can be a terrific learning tool," said Bukiet. "It demonstrates how math can be used to help us understand the world around us."
