Anger in China Over Giant Breasts in the Park

China: A sculpture of a 20cm-high girl with breasts that are 5 metres wide installed in a public park in Foshan City, Guangdong province has drawn the ire of locals. The statue has been repeatedly vandalised and even given a bra.

A spokesperson for the park said that disagreements over art are normal and that the statue is permanent. A kindergarten teacher visiting the park with her class says there were little girls terrified they were going to grow breasts that big.

"The park used to be a great place for families, but now what attracts my son the most is the huge breasts. I have tried to educate him with some scientific knowledge, but all he thinks when he sees the statue are smutty thoughts," said one mother.

  WARNING

Source has picture of the sculpture in question. It´s reasonably tame (as sculptures of enormous breasts go) but might potentially be NSFW if you have a fairly puritanical workplace.

I not in any way offended by the concept

of having nude sculptures/statues in public. In fact, I think it would be good if there was more nudity shown in the world and less violence.

That being said... how is there any artistic merit to this statue? I have an open mind, but this one´s going to take some convincing... :)

  Only

the Chineses can find out thing like this.

It demonstrates how society is becoming more focused on the physical female form and losing sight of the person?

damn awesome. Who hasn´t wanted a statue of boobs with a little woman attached.

  Scaredy boob-cats

"The little girls were scared and cried loudly, asking me if they would grow those huge things, and boys laughed crazily," she said."

Why do I have a hard time believing that? I could see one asking if she will have boobs like that or another one saying she didn´t want boobs like that but not crying tearfully because that is what her boobs would become. Even of one did become upset it is so easy to explain it and they can calm down, just ask them if they think that tiny girl could be a real live girl and watch them laugh and say no, or no silly mama if it was mine.:-p Then once it is established that the little girl isn´t going to be 20cm tall you can easily explain that she won´t ever had boobs like that, but it is art. She probably already lost you back and is that little girl taller than you.

They only way this is going to be smutty or inappropriate is if the adults make it so. We are a society that makes our young females insecure and scared to like their own budy and to instead aim to be thin and unrealistic. I think we should push and push some more that their look don´t matter you are pretty the exact way you are!

  Liberal...

This is the most liberal thing the commies have ever done and they are taking flak for it!! How about a walk-in sculpture of the other female body part?

 by: Jayman2000BC   11/02/2009 09:19 AM
  "the other body part"?

Jayman --- so women have only two body parts? Would that be breasts and brains?

  @penandra...

He probably meant something we can prove women have. :)

Of course I meant ´brains´. What? Am I missing something here??

 by: Jayman2000BC   11/03/2009 03:17 AM
  Flawed...

While the attention to aesthetic detail is commendable, the science is all wrong. The effect of gravity has been largely glossed over by the sculptor. In it´s entirety, I must say that the sculpture does look misplaced and not representative of China.

  Yawn

Just another two bit shock value ´artist´. Noone needs a message that we look at breasts too much over the person -- anybody on the street can tell you that. It won´t change it.

  The MEANING

... of so much art lately will now be melodramatically revealed by me ...

This is what the artists are telling us:

"I got nothing."
