Are Moderates Still Welcome in the Republican Party?

The surprise withdrawal of the Republican candidate in a New York congressional race raises fresh questions about whether moderates have a place in today's GOP. Dierdre Scozzafava not only withdrew; she endorsed the Democrat in the race.

While Republicans insist their party is inclusive, they embraced Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman because of his hard-right stances over Scozzafava, seen as more moderate -- or even "lib----."

Even before her withdrawal, some Republicans seeking to attract new people to the party, such as Newt Gingrich, worried that the harsh rhetoric employed in the anti-Scozzafava campaign would repel right-leaning moderates from supporting the GOP.

  Republicans
 Fundamentally a sound Idea for a party, but for all the rhetoric, they refuse to evolve that´s why their party is damn near dead. They are dinosaurs in a modern world. They are supposed to be the example for solid morals and Ideas, and all they show themselves to be decrepit whining loudmouth bigots,who refuse to embrace change and open-minded candidates in their own party who could lead them to victory, who our system caters too because they make the most noise, and have the most money.

  I´d like to see ....
 More Ron Paul types in the GOP, but perhaps not quite as extreme as he is. They certainly wouldn´t be moderates, but it´s kinda funny when someone who´s genuinely against letting our country be bankrupted by undeclared wars is seen as an extremist, a weirdo ,etc. I think the real bad guys are the McCains who vote for bad laws and support these so called "wars". The ´best´ thing that could happen if we are successful in the Middle East is companies will have 2 more places to outsource American´s jobs.

 @OriginAl
You forgot, murderous, adulterous, closet homosexual, bribe taking, bankrupting, bought and paid for hypocrites. The party of ‘morals’ has none.

@Badmonkey
I wouldn’t call Paul an extremist, just a true Republican. I believe in many of the ‘old school’ Republican platforms. The Neo-Con Republicans on the other hand are extremists and espouse few of the old ideas. I wrote in Paul for VP at the last election as he is a staunch protector of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, two highly endangered documents. In the past 8 years the Neo-Cons did everything in their power to destroy the Constitution and should be charged for treason for their efforts.

Unless the GOP gets back to their basics and dumps the religious right extremism they are doomed. Their base will keep shrinking as the older population dies off and they will be replaced with a more moderate party. The pendulum is swinging. Right now it is hanging straight down and soon it will be swinging further to the left. “We the People” have had our fill of the rights hypocrisy and lies, that was adequately demonstrated at the last election.

 I hope you don´t believe the Democrats are none of these. (Well, they´re more open about homosexuality.) But they´re politicials and as guilty of the other sins. Irrespective of which party they belong to, or even some small parties, they´re all a bunch of crooks.

  funny thing is; when it´s time for a facelift..
 When they realize they´ve ostrasized everyone else, they´ll start wheeling out their John McCains and ´reassuringly urbane´ candidates.

I just hope that people remember the fundamentalists that are still getting paid 120K as GOP members who have been biting their tongue for the previous 3 years.

 I think I love you. That post was well said and 100% true.

The GOP does not want anyone who is in the ´mushy middle´. If you are not a ´Taliban Republican´, they don´t want you.

  This just in.....
 NO! Moderates are not welcome in the GOP. Those of you who are moderates are directed to visit www.lp.org.

The Libertarian Party welcomes you and will not take your guns, raise your taxes, steal your property or stomp your Constitution. Further, they don´t care your religion, race or sexual orientation and are perfectly fine with your drug of choice.

Seems a no brainer to me...

  The pendulum will swing
 When Republicans had more diversity of ideas, there were more moderates and the Democrat party was left with its liberal core. But Republicans mistook moderate votes for support for their ideals and overplayed their hand. Now the Democrats have more moderate support and stand to do the same with their liberal agenda. It´s only a matter of time. Either the Republicans will realize that they need to be more inclusive, or the Libertarians will gain at their expense.

  A libertarian government would never work.
 Sorry folks, its a pipe dream. The whole idea of a society is to help each other. "F**K you, got mine" is not the way to a functional society.

Wanna see a society that libertarians hail as a huge success? Take a nice look at Somalia. Hooray lack of government controls!

 by: ub3rtristan   11/05/2009 08:35 AM
  @ubertristan
 Somalia is a society with no government at all. Libertarians do not sanction the idea that there should be no government, they sanction the idea that government is to be tasked with only defense, legislation and law enforcement.

 Hahahaha. I love this Democrat/Media propaganda. It´s in the Democratic Party that moderates are welcome. Remember Bob Casey? Scozzafava was not a moderate...she was more left than the Democrat she was challenging! Of course, Hoffman is "Hard" right, Ultra right, etc. Let´s face it, to the Dems a "moderate" is anyone left of center. If you don´t agree with them, you´re a right winger and if you do, you´re a moderate.

I´m so looking forward to the next Presidential election when Obama joins his buddy Carter as a one-term fool.

 Sorry, but that party is a little too much hands-off. Seems more like an Anarchist party.

 Correction: It´s in the Democratic Party that moderates are NOT welcome.

Article link isn´t working either.

  adhemar...
 "Sounds a little too hands off" tells me you have done at best, very little research into the Libertarian and at worst, none.

Anarchists want no government. Libertarians very much support a strong, well equipped government with limited duties and control of personal liberties.

 Yes, wrong word.

I could support them on some issues, but 1.4 Abortion is a showstopper. After all, what is more protecting of Personal Liberty than protecting those who can´t protect themselves?
