Karzai has won the presidential elections in Afghanistan after his main opposition, Abdullah Abdullah, stepped down from the race. The elections were due to be held on 7th November, but they have now been cancelled.
Azizullah Ludin said on a news discussion in Kabul: "We declare Hamid Karzai, which got the majority of votes in the first round and since he is the only candidate for the second round be declared as elected president of Afghanistan."
Even though figures pointed to Karzai being the winner, this 2nd poll was to be used to salvage his tainted reputation. Observers questioned the legalities of his success & if he could serve any positive purpose as President.
