A young man who had "depressing thoughts" and suffered loneliness, as he announced on a website, jumped from the NYU library building.
He left a note in his dorm but had not indicated earlier that he would kill himself. Witnesses said they heard a "loud thud" when the young man hit the floor.
A close friend of his wrote him a message that night because he wanted to go out with him. He called the incident "surprising" because "he was a happy guy."
The sad truth is when someone seriously considers suicide there is nothing you can do to change their mind, they have to come to the decision themselves. From the source it sounds like he suffered from insomnia or was a night person. I had a Dr. that would tell me if I tried to do this or change that I would be able to sleep ´normal´ hours, it never worked for more than a day or two. I really believe that some people are ´wired´ for being a night owl. It sounds like part of the problem was that the people he knew and were friends with were mostly asleep when he needed to talk to them or wanted to go out.
He did give what I would have consider a hint that he needed help when he went to walk to his mom´s house. He wrote that he was mugged by a guy who had a knife and then a man with a gun showed up and saved him. He knew it was dangerous and he very well could have been hoping to have been killed by someone so he wouldn´t have to do it himself. I do wonder how he got over the see through glass to jump, he had to have planned that for awhile to know how to get over and jump before anyone could stop him.
Now all the family and friends are trying to guess what they could have done to stop it, why didn´t they see any signs, why didn´t he tell them and 100 other things.
this is like the sixth or seventh suicide at NYU in the last few years. He actually climbed over some glass panels that had been installed to prevent this very thing.

Vex- Sad to say, but you are right. When someone is determined they have back-up plans for their back-up plan.
My heart aches for his parents because they is going to feel like the biggest failure and they will think about every visit, email or call word by word and movement by movement to see if they missed something.
I agree Tara, his parents will and that is a tragedy. I´ve had some...issues...in this area throughout my life, and once I got past it (for the most part anyway) I told my mom that there wasn´t anything that she could have done differently to make me a more stable person. But even still, if anything had ever happened to me, she would have believed she was a failure, as would any parent I imagine. Or anyone close, really.

My friend did it by pouring petrol on him self and lightning him self up, the raging guilt I feel was incredible. I nee stop thinking how I as his friend could have made a difference, but someone close to us ha deeply hurt us and martin just could not get through it.
I´m thankful to have not had any in my life die by their own hand. I feel guilty enough about the people I´ve known who died by other causes, and how I wasn´t close enough to them. I can´t imagine how I would deal with a friend or family member taking their own life...
I´m glad to be here too! :) There are still some days that are harder than others, but I´m thankful to have a nice group of supportive people around now...and I´ve learned more to express things as opposed to keeping everything to myself which I think is what the problem was then.
It is horrible to be on either side of the issue, contemplating suicide or losing someone because of it. I have been there 2 seperate times in my life, both I have mentioned on here before. I got so bad when it came to Kieran that one day I told the husband to take me to community Health immediatley, if I wouldn´t have done that I know that I would not be here at all.
I feel so bad for this young man, I don´t know if reason will ever be found for why, I hope that people will read the news and realize it just isn´t worth it.

I´m sure it´s a combination of many things, but one fact is that there is a lot of pressure in elite schools to out-perform others. I go to one and it seems like every year there´s someone who commits suicide.
Imagine being the best for 18-years and suddenly surrounded by other "bests". If your GPA drops, you feel like you´ve reached a dead end. These schools try hard to keep suicides out of the news.
Recently close to where I live a woman comitted suiside by jumping from the 2nd floor. I was surprised she died since it isn´t that high, but I guess if you hit the ground right... A guy who was in a special forces unit I was training with jumped from a plane at 10,000 ft and his chute didn´t open and he hit the ground and got up and walked away.
