Justice of the Peace Who Didn´t Want To Marry Interracial Couple Leaves Office

Louisiana judge Keith Bardwell, who refused to give a marriage license to an interracial couple, has quit. This decision will come into force on Tuesday.

Several politicians have demanded the resignation of the JP. He did not explain his step but only said, "I do hereby resign the office of Justice of the Peace for the Eighth Ward of Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, effective November 3, 2009."

Some time ago he was not willing to marry a white woman and a black man; another official had to issue the marriage license. About his decision, he said that he wouldn't be a racist and was worried about the effect the marriage would have on children.

  Good news...
it is good to see a racist back down. Never mind maybe he will find work with the BNP here in UK.

  He didn´t sell out.
He backed his beliefs and even though I do not agree with him on them I can respect that he resigned rather than to compromise himself. He could not do part of the job he was hired for and that means he needed to either accept it move on.

I am pretty sure that he will find something new if he hasn´t already and could probably make some money on the talk shows, news shows and cable shows. That and a book deal could easily keep him financially secure.

I don´t think he should be celebrated or rewarded, but knowing how things happen he will be up for his 15 minutes of fame.

  I
for example see nothing strange in that if a white and a black get married, certainly the racism controlled him.

This Racist Only Quit After He Was Exposed
He inflicted his racist beliefs on others during his tenure. If he had moral objections to doing his job he should never have accepted it in the first place.
I find nothing honorable about what he did.
He is entitled to live his life as he sees fit, but others are just as entitled to their lives without his moralist bigotry being shoveled on them, ruining what should be one of the happiest times in their lives.

I agree that he only quit after being exposed for his prejudice showed towards interracial couples, by him leaving since he can´t or won´t put aside his own beliefs it is a winning situation for the people of the Parish. I´d like to point out he isn´t racist he is actually prejudiced. He married black couples and was friends with man in the black community who really had nothing bad to say about him until after this became news. I am not sticking up for him on that either, just pointing it out.

It seems people are thinking about one specific defiaition of respect and I am being misunderstood.

10. to show regard or consideration for: to respect someone´s rights.

I do not think he deserves anything, I am however looking at what could have happened if he didn´t resign. He could have fought the parish, county and state over any attempts to remove him from office which would have cost the taxpayers money that most places don´t have.

  "being exposed" ???
I´m pretty sure he wasn´t "exposed". He was rather open with his beliefs wouldn´t you say?

And why is it so hard for you brainwashed sheep to understand that not believing in racial/cultural mixing does not necessarily equate to racial hatred?

I for one am against mixing. I believe we´re different for a reason and we should keep it that way. Equal, but different.

I commend this man on having the testicular fortitude to voice his opinion in leu of modern criticism to such beliefs.

That should stir a few pots..

  Rippler....
This has nothing to do with his mine or your beliefs about whether or not racial mixing is good or bad for whatever reasons.

It has to do with the fact that this man refused to perform the duties he had sworn to perform for the taxpayers of his Parish. As an officer of the court, his obligations are explicitly to enforce and follow the laws in effect at a given time. He has neither the freedom nor the right to arbitrarily refuse to follow the law because of personal preference.

I don´t know if he´s a racist or not and frankly, I don´t care. It´s simple, do your job or leave.
