The Israeli Navy boarded and seized a ship apparently destined for Lebanon and Hezbollah, carrying hundreds of tons of arms. Workers were expected to take hours to unload the vessel, piling crates upon crates of grenades and rockets.
A Syrian spokesman initially claimed the ship was carrying arms from Syria to Iran, although stamps on the cargo indicated Iranian origin and the ship was headed toward Syria.
Israeli officials have not yet provided proof that the arms were headed toward the Syrian guerrillas.
