In Japan, a three-man crew aboard the 10-ton Diasan Shinsho-maru fishing trawler survived after it capsized due to dozens of huge Nomura's jellyfish in their net that they were trying to retrieve. Their individual weight can be as much as 200 kg.
The men were off the coast of Chiba when they went overboard; another trawler nearby rescued them. Four years ago, a similar inundation of the jellyfish occurred there, causing inedible fish and damaged nets, as well as injured fishermen.
Nomura's jellyfish are not well understood, with large swings in year-to-year populations in the Sea of Japan. Experts say that a decline in predators such as certain fish species and sea turtles are to blame for the problem.
