A proposal to prevent the export of military hardware manufactured in Switzerland is to be put to the vote. The export ban would not apply to civilian weapons. Two previous blanket bans on weapons exports have failed.
Swiss manufacturers have come out swinging against the proposal, saying that there will be conflicts internationally with or without their exports and claiming that the ban would cost the nation 10,000 jobs.
"We don't want Swiss weapons to be involved in wars any longer and we don't want Switzerland to export weapons that are used in conflicts that the majority of the Swiss population are not in favor of," said a spokesman for the group behind the vote.
