Massive Power Outages Were Caused by Hackers

According to CBS's 60 Minutes program two blackouts that affected millions of Brazilians in 2005 and again in 2007 were caused by hackers going after systems that control the power grid.

The spotlight has been turned on US defenses with Mike McConnell, a former Chief of US National Intelligence, saying that a similar attack on the US is likely imminent and that the US is unprepared for it.

For several years the US has been under cyber attack with the major government web sites coming under attack and the US command network for both Iraq and Afghanistan, CENTCOM, suffering a breach of unknown origin.

  Despite...

...cartoon jokes, this could be very serious, as the hackable scada systems used are not only for electric, but for nuclear plants as well.

  As well as

..life support systems, banking, military and god knows how much. These hackers are a real problem, I hope that if caught, they serve many, many years in prison.

  Why

Why are these networks even visible to them? Obviously something that important will be under attack

  Excuse me,

but is´nt defacing a crappy US government website by some scriptkiddy (or ...sigh... North Korea) a total different ballgame than entering the controls of a power grid? Get real. I´ll bet the last one does not have an IP-address.

Of course it has an IP address. How else will it be monitored and maintained? It is most likely only visible to what was considered very secure VPN though.

  Why

Do people do this? To get a laugh? It´s really sad, like in the coments on top, People could really get hurt by this. Honestly, I hope these people relize that they really could kill people by doing this.
