Man Designs Electric Wheelchair That Can Climb Stairs

China: After seeing his 65-year-old wife Wang Huifang struggle up and down the stairs between their apartment on the fifth floor and ground level with a broken leg 67-year-old Li Rongbiao has designed a wheelchair that can go up and down stairs.

Li started with no mechanical knowledge but taught himself what he needed out of books and came up for a design for the chair. The current prototype needs minimal assistance from another person but soon Li hopes to have the chair totally independent.

Having sold his apartment to finance the designing and patenting of his new wheelchair Li is looking for commercial partners to help him get the device on the market. The wheelchair can reportedly climb 3,000 stairs before it needs recharging.

  ummmmm......

I am pretty sure that there are wheelchair models that can already climb stairs. I can´t exactly remember where I saw one, BUT I can distinctly remember seeing such a prototype/model of a stair climbing wheelchair before.

I seemed to remember that the guy who invented the Segway also invented a wheelchair that uses gyroscopes that could climb stairs.

Back when I was in school

A frighteningly long time ago, one of our teachers had MS. He had a red electric wheelchair with 3 wheels mounted on a triangle on each side. Much like the wheelchair in the picture at the source.

I don´t think this is a new thing, but it´s certainly a very good idea.

  Two Things

1) This is the first time I ever hear of a wheelchari that climbs stairs.

2) Isn´t anybody impressed that a guy with no engineering/mechanical background built this out of love for his wife? This guy´s a hero in my book.

  Nothing new(been around for years...)

But it´s from ananova - so I´m not surprised.

@ ixuzus: I think you´re the only one here still submitting from that site - let it go man ;)

@ jhax: there is a first time for everything. Does this not make you wonder what else there is you have never heard about?

I´m not impressed by the wheel chair, Im impressed by the guy´s determination.

I find odd that no1 in here has even mentioned him, it´s all about the wheel chair.

I was responding to your first comment. Now I will respond to your second - It´s arrogant to believe that someone needs a background in something to be good at it. Apart from that, assuming the story is true, yes it´s impressive what he did: Selling his apartment and going for it so that his wife would be quicker on stairs.

By the way, if you copy/paste usernames, you won´t out yourself as someone who can´t spell (sorry I couldn´t resist that but you presented it on a silver platter).

Peace,
MJ

Arrogant? hahahaha Try telling that to the guy that´s interviewing you for a job. "Yes sir, I don´t have a degree on this field but that will not degrade my performance"

Learning on your own is a rare skill in todays world, it requires a lot of effort and determination.

You think people can read a book on medicine and then go straight to surgery?

I agree that a lot of people don´t seem to be capable of learning, irrespective of whether autodidactically or in schools. Learning on your own only requires a lot of effort if you lack the mental capacity, which is something some people just have and others don´t. Just like some people need to go to a gym to have a hint of triceps and other plop out into this world with a six-pack.

I don´t agree with the job interview example - if a degree is the requirement, the interview won´t take place if the applicant does not have the degree.

As to people going straight from a text book to surgery - it has happened in VERY RARE cases. More common is that doctors have no clue. Point is that formal education and degrees are highly overrated.

Wait a minute...lemme get this straight. The man´s wife had troubles getting up the stairs at their apartment complex, so he sold it so he could afford to build a wheelchair that can get up stairs?

Exactly what stairs will she be going up seeing how they´re not living there anymore? LOL

Wouldn´t it be more efficient to simply move to a ground floor location? China doesn´t have any laws for the handicapped?

  @vex

Considering China´s population I would imagine it is hard to find places to live.

Also, even if they moved, his wife would still not be able to move up stairs.
