Chinese Censor Obama´s Town Hall Meeting With Students

During President Obama's Town Hall-style meeting with students in Shanghai Tuesday, several questions were asked about China's "Great Firewall", the Internet filtering that the Chinese government requires on all Chinese computers.

“I can tell you that in the United States, the fact that we have free Internet - or unrestricted Internet access - is a source of strength, and I think should be encouraged," Obama said. But that message was not heard because it was filtered.

A transcript of the meeting was posted on one blog, but was taken down after just 27 minutes. Only one local station even aired the meeting. The meeting was streamed on the White House Web site, which is not filtered, but it was choppy.

Obama says that he wants the internet to be free, but he is a proponent of "net neutrality", which allows the government to regulate ISP´s, for the supposed purpose of protecting that freedom.

Government regulation of ISP´s is exactly what is going to lead to the censorship of the internet, just like in China, and even Australia.

The only thing that will protect internet freedom is low tax, and low regulation, so that there can be maximum competition in the ISP market.

Net neutrality *protects* your internet freedom. It prevents ISP´s from deciding what content they want to display when they want to display it. It protects large and small internet users alike.

I´m not sure why you would be against freedom.

  Net Neutrality is anything but,

if you want a free internet, keep the government out of it. A free market has always been and always will be the best approach to liberty. The more regulation, the harder it is for competition to break into the market to offer choices. Choices equal competition equals Consumer win.
Resist the Michael Moore branded new definition of "capitalism", folks. If the government regulates it in any way, it´s NOT free market.
Once again, I offer the challenge; name me a government regulation, and I will show you how it´s hurt competition, consumer choice and/or liberties.

  As

for us here we can not complain of the Internet access, only on the public computers some websites are banned and it´s understandable.

Yes, the proposed bill will do those things but just like every other bill that goes through congress, it has some vague verbiage and allows for a commission to be held responsible for creating new rules AFTER the bill is signed into law.

Such is the modus operandi of our lawmakers.... write up a really good sounding piece of legislation but always leave it open ended so as to be adjusted when no one is looking.

In simple terms, the issue at hand here is whether or not data pipe owners should be allowed to restrict access or use of their conduits. Yet this bill provides for a government commission to "promote an ever-increasing level of Internet access service to end users".

WTF? That smells like forcing ISPs into providing service to certain people at little or no charge.

I for one, don´t want the social engineers in Washington thinking up ways to ensure homeless people have free access to the same data pipes I have to pay for. They´re supposed to be protecting users from discrimination and price gouging, not creating another entitlement program.

Does this mean that the Republicans (that were scared of the brainwashing, etc.) are aligned with the Chinese gov´t that is well known for humanitarian violations? Interesting...
