Ku Klux Klan Protests College Football Game

A small number of Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan members staged a short protest prior to a football game between Louisiana State University and the University of Mississippi over the decision to stop playing the song 'Dixie'.

Previously at games a group of fans had chanted "the South will rise again" at the conclusion of the song. The fans were asked to stop but they didn't so Chancellor Dan Jones had the band drop the song from the play list.

During the protest the Klansmen waved flags and made Nazi salutes. The protest was outnumbered about twenty to one by hecklers ranging in age from adults down to young children.

I think you should just give up when you get to the point that you have to protest at a collage football game.

  Surprised

... that we haven´t yet had one of the usual gang of idiots come in and point out that the protesters have the right to free speech, as if that somehow justifies their message.

  actually, it´s still free-speech

I don´t think it justifies their arguement.
But they have a right to be there.

Good point. I find their message odious, but support their right to say what they think. It´s a quick step from stopping speech like this to stopping any expression.

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/) it means he´s a Knighthawk, which handles security.

@cranky: we better not labor the point tho´

No one here is saying he shouldn´t be here. Just the fact they´re sh!ts.

And everytime I see their name in the media, it just reminds me against apathy and complacency.

  I moved

to Louisiana last year to be with my girlfriend. I´m right on the river, at the LA/MS border. I hear the phrase "the south will rise again" with depressing regularity. I also get to hear about how the "rebel flag" is a source of pride; when I ask them what it is they are proud of all I get is blank stares. As an atheistic, politically liberal-ish person I´m really out of my element here.

I hope your GF knows how much you care for her. I also hope you have some friends that either feel the same way or doesn´t push their views on you. Certain areas are still stuck in the past and while the younger generations for the most part have and want no part of it, there are still some hardcore and hardline families that raise their young ones that this is the only way.

  Well Ben

If they are on public land or have permission to be on the land these creeps do have the right to free speech. If you can take it away from them then they can take it away from you.

The easiest way to take a right away is to find some crud using the right. Few would jump out to defend the scum. Now it is established that this right can be rescinded. It is then only a matter of time before the "damned piece of paper" is valueless.

I don´t think anyone has actually claimed that they didn´t have a right to assemble. In fact, to date no one has done so.

We seem to be a little overly defensive when I don´t see an issue.

  New?

Isn´t protesting a new avenue for the KKK? I thought all they did - besides shave their heads, bitch about unfair life is and try to recruit young boys via their shirtless "hate" keggers - was march around and get protested by other groups.

@Chaotic
I always liked the Confederate flags with "Heritage Not Hate" written on them. I´m sure you´ve seen a few since the move.

  The KKK idiots

Don´t they look ridiculous in their Halloween costumes? I always liked the ´dunce´ caps they wear. It portrays their lack of brain power. Bedford Forrest is dead guys, you can give it up, now.

It´s really hard to believe that with as much progress the world has made, there are still idiots out there that think that the color of your skin makes you better than someone else. I know it happens all the time and there is still a lot of progress to be made, but it still blows my mind.

Actually if you do a little independent reading you will find that Nathan Bedford Forrest was actually for black rights. Just google "Jubilee of Pole-Bearers". He actually said that blacks should be given more rights into professional classes and that more harmony was needed between whites and blacks.

Most attribute him as a racist due to the events of the Ft Pillow masacre. However it is unknown how much involvement if any he had in initiating that. He was a member of the KKK at one point but his public statements in regards toward race relations are quite different in comparison with the KKK itself.
