And the Darwin Award for 2009 Goes to...

The Darwin award for the person who improves the gene pool the most by removing themselves has been awarded to two Belgian thieves who tried to blow up an ATM and ended up blowing up the entire building with them inside.

The pair beat Florida nominee Shawn Motero, who hopped out of his car in a traffic jam, leaped over a concrete barrier, and died following a 65 foot fall. He reportedly needed to pee and didn't 'look before he leaked'.

Also noteworthy was a woman who drowned under the impression that the rubber wheels on her moped would get her through a flood, and a robber who spray-painted his face gold as a disguise, was identified anyway, and died from the paint fumes.

" leaped over a concrete barrier, and died following a 65 foot fall."

That same scenario happened in upper East Tennessee many years ago. Three guys left a night club after getting into an argument with someone at the club. They had all been drinking. They left in a car and got to talking about the altercation. One of the guys wanted to go back and possibly confront someone again. Well the driver stopped on a bridge on the divided highway. The guy got out and jumped over the concrete median barrier. After a long while when the guy didn´t come back, the second guy decided to go check on his friend. He got out and scaled the same wall. Then after a long time the driver decided to go check on his two buddies, but he stopped and looked over the wall first. There at the bottom of a ravine were the first two guys lying dead on the ground.
The moral of this story is, "Look before you leap."

I was disappointed the one about "the Cambodian man who tried to eat the wasps nest and died from stings" didn´t make it into the Darwin Awards.

@lurker- So if the guys wanted to go back and fight, why were they getting out of the car in the middle of a bridge? How come they didn´t just drive back?

I don´t know what they were thinking. That was the way the story was in the newspaper at the time. Maybe the guy thought he could sneak back to the club and surprise somebody. They had only gone about a half mile from the club.
