Historian Ellen Fitzpatrick has undertaken the momentous task of compiling hundreds of letters of condolence sent to former First Lady Jackie Kennedy after the assassination of her husband. 800,000 letters were sent in the first seven weeks.
Fitzpatrick had to whittle it down to just 200 favourites for her book and had to get permission from each individual author; just five people said no. She came up with the idea for the book while doing research for a different project.
She said: "We´ve heard from the experts, we´ve heard from the conspiracy theorists, we´ve heard from people in the Kennedy administration, but here are the voices of those voiceless, everyday Americans." "Letters to Jackie" is from HarperCollins.
