Immigrants Riot in Santa Cruz

A large group of immigrant workers in Santa Cruz, CA, rioted late Saturday night in a demonstration during the "May Day" labor holiday.

Several businesses were damaged in the riots. Rioters carried makeshift torches and set fire to several businesses.

Police arrested one protester because of a previous parole violation. He had previously been arrested for burglary. No other arrests were made in relation to the vandalism.

"Haynes admitted to participating in the rally after receiving a flyer at a local anarchist café"... the rally was,
"May Day rally". Which is a communist rally which claims to represent immigrants... No immigrants arrested, weirdly enough.

Take it up with the source. I saw this riot. The entire downtown area had their windows busted out too,and immigrants tried to set fire to "White people". This was a race riot. If I wanted to be bias I would, but I only relayed what was in the source.

where in the source do you see:
immigrants tried to set fire to white people?

you´re obviously smoking crack! or you are delusional. You either travel a lot in all the other places you seem to be or traveling via the black winged horse.

So you´re claiming that all immigrants are communist anarchists?

The word immigrant showed up once in the source and no other variation of the word was used. So with that, I can only assume that by "take it up with the source", you meant the source of the summary and in that case, mexican did just that.

You claim you were there and I won´t call you a liar but I will point out that you are in California. California, like Arizona, New Mexico and Texas all have a lot more Mexican immigrants than other parts of the country. Suffice it to say, Washington, Wyoming, Maine and even Northern California have a lot more Canadian immigrants than other parts of the US.

Further, there was no mention in the source of illegal immigrants, so have you forgotten that our country was built on the backs of immigrants?

So in reviewing the facts, this was a story about communist anarchists (which is a ridiculous combination of beliefs) who support immigration, attacking local businesses.

You were there, saw some dark skinned people, assumed them to all be illegal immigrants and proceeded to post a story with a title that mirrors only your personal views.

Don´t get me wrong, you´re entitled to your opinions and I support your right to express them, however wrong I might think they are. But don´t expect to post a bastardized summary of a news story and get away with not being called out for it.

  Have to agree
Just because they were demonstrating for, according to the source, "immigrant rights" does not make the protesters immigrants themselves. However, TU doesn´t call them "illegal" anywhere.

I also have to agree that "communist anarchist" is a really weird combination of philosophies:

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need!" "No, wait, that sounds like a rule! Rules imprison us!"

You live in Texas and work in the medical field, your girlfriend lives in Oklahoma and works for Planned Parenthood and then you just happened to be in Santa Monica during "the communist May Day labor Holiday."

A few groups of protesters become violent and ruin it for any that were around, just as it happens at most rallies and protests anymore. People have the right to protest and while I may have problems with illegal immigration from anyone, not just Mexicans, there is nothing at all to suggest that an illegal group of any nationality was involved.

We have seen this happen with the Summit last year, after rock concerts or sporting events when people who are taking to the street to celebrate or protest are often faced with several groups who are out to cause problems and not solutions or celebrations.

I find it interesting that a large group of immigrant workers happened to riot on May Day instead of any of the past years celebrations that are spotted all over the US. Sounds like a group of troublemakers turned this into something they could then claim and point fingers at instead of anything else.

  Circle the wagons!
It just hit me. Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo.

  Regarding communism
Communism isn´t -supposed- to involve a totalitarian bureaucracy, so I can imagine what a "communist anarchist" might be, but I agree that it verges on oxymoron.

I removed the ´communist´ you had before "May Day". Nowhere in the source does the word communist appear, if you´re going to report the news, keep your opinion out of it.

  LOL Verm
I must be getting old I didn´t realize it either lol.
  by: JaniceD   05/05/2010 12:20 AM
Yes its not in the source. Just general knowledge that may day is a holiday created and championed by communist and labor parties throughout Europe. I could have worded it better, I guess some people consider communist to be a "Dirty Word" even though it might accurately describe the said event.
by: Tetsuru Uzuki     05/05/2010 08:07 PM
´Common knowledge´ or not, if it´s not in the source, it´s not acceptable to use in your summary.

In the US we celebrated May Day at school every year. We had May Poles set up on the lawn and the girls danced around the poles with their streamers. It had nothing to do with Communism and still doesn´t in this country, nor does it in Mexico.

  May Day
We call it Beltaine or May day.

There is a pole.

People dance around it.

Dancing = communism?

I am shocked sir.

  May 1st is actually...
4 different holidays:

Walpurgis Day
May Day
International Workers´ Day

The supposed ´Communist´ holiday is #4, but it wasn´t started by them, just taken over by them. it actually began in Australia.

  Oops, make that 5...
I forgot about Kaatripäev in Estonia. It literally means "Hangover Day" xD

  right none arrested
ever try to control a crowd of thousands with 20 people? even with out weapons see if you can figures how many bullets against thousands. like trying to stop a tank with a garden hose. non violet? ha ha ha. look at film footage on different web sites not fox or other news feeds. either people are idiots, illegals, or non illegals kissings rears so they will not get their windoes broken out or fire bombs in their stores that are posting comments violance could not be from illegals. .
  by: shannon853   05/06/2010 04:59 AM
You make no sense... you are saying that people are kissing butts so as not to have their windows broken or stores firebombed? I am beginning to see that stupid is not by happenstance, but takes determination and dedication even in the fact of facts.
Any analysis of the facts would make your assessment pointless. Anyway...

So you can have some fun with this:
Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of a battle in which indigenous soldiers fought against france... the mostly teen mexican army led by a Texan named Ignacio Zaragoza, also of idigenous heritage, ultimately lost because of lack of support.

So, what is celebrated is the courage of indigenous children fighting against, at the time, one of the world´s most powerful nations while being sold out by their own government. Sounds very Mexican.

Strangely enough, the war was caused as the result of the American invasion of mexico and the policies implemented by the newly implanted government. That is, they stopped paying their debts to europe because that debt was incurred by the prior government. Had the french won, i wonder what mexico would have become?
  by: mexicanrevolution   05/06/2010 02:35 PM
No argument here. Believe it or not I already knew most of that. I just thought the timing was funny.
  by: VermiciousG     05/06/2010 04:23 PM
I can answer your question, mexican....
Had the French won, Mexico would have become South Louisiana. ;)

  by: bbeljefe     05/07/2010 04:17 AM
Interesting theory but that would also make south Texas French. Are you sure that you want to go there? People have died for much, much less.
  by: VermiciousG     05/07/2010 05:34 AM
How many South Texans do you know who speak French and look Mexican? :)
