Blizzard Cancels Plans for Forum Real ID

On July 6th, Blizzard announced it would be implementing its Real ID system on its World of Warcraft forums, as well as for its upcoming RTS Starcraft II, which shows real names instead of person-created screen names. Blizzard canceled these plans.

After receiving over 44,000 replies on the subject, Blizzard has heeded the words of its subscriber base and canceled plans for this system to be used on the forums. Real ID is still an optional in-game element of World of Warcraft.

Blizzard Entertainment CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime issued a statement indicating that despite the cancellation of Real ID for the forums, they are still 100% committed to improving the forums toward more constructive conversations about WoW.
