Ireland: Grocery chain Lidl Ireland has settled for €7,500 after a woman brought a lawsuit alleging assault, defamation of character, false imprisonment, and negligence over an incident in which her son was falsely accused of theft.
A cashier chased the boy and accused him of shoplifting as he and his mother left the shop. The mother re-entered the store and found the boy in tears. She produced proof that the chips in question had been paid for but ´wasn´t taken seriously´.
"We managed to settle it over negotiations lasting for a month or two and they eventually gave an offer of €7,500," said lawyer Dermot McNamara. The money has been put aside and will become available to the child when he grows up.
