Security Consultant Scans, Collects and Publishes Data of 100 Million Facebook Users

Security consultant Ron Bowles has used a code to scan Facebook and gather public data from 100 million Facebook users, including unique IDs, profile URL, and their name. The list was then put up to download on the Internet.

Facebook denies that the issue is one of privacy concerns, as the information gathered was public anyway and available on search engines such as Google and Bing. "No private data is available or has been compromised," a Facebook statement said.

However, security analysts believe the actual issue is the fact that the information was easily scanned and collected. "It is inconceivable that a firm with hundreds of engineers couldn´t have imagined a trawl of this magnitude..."

  It´s

Very stupid to complain about this, Facebook was never created to be used for millions around the world, thats why it does not have hard security, and it will never have it beacause its not on its nature, the next generation of masive comunity software will have but idiots will complain that it has to much security

I agree, this really shouldn´t even be news. The BBC picked up on it and posted the original torrent name found on thepiratebay, so those who didn´t know how to get it, surely do now.

It doesn´t matter anyway. All those people who really want to get private data, all they have to do is friend request someone saying that they play X game, and want to be neighbors.

facebook´s view.... public info vs private info

On facebook you have privacy settings to set almost any information you have listed as either public or private.... so what facebook claims was just public info was the stuff you have currently set for everyone to see....

.........by the way, a while back facebook was playing around with their privacy settings, trying to make it easier for end users to figure out what´s currently set to public or private... as a result, i know of many friends that noticed most of their information got set to public without them changing it

If you use social networking sites, you get what you deserve. Get off them and get a real life.

what he said.

  Asking for it

I have to agree you get what you deserve when it comes to social networking. You can´t really think nothing would be done with all of that marketing data. Don´t put anything online you don´t want people to see. Bottom line.

  Maybe Im wrong but ...

I dont think it is the issue of what they collected, but the ease they done it with. There are those that perhaps think they should have been detected sooner, for them I would just like to say ´botnet´.

  Who cares?

By using facebooks inbuild search engine, everyone can find the same information. This so called "security consultant" just wanted to be in the media. He has accomplished nothing. This is only impressive to people who do not know much about the topic.

  That´s Why

I use a phony name for Facebook.

  phone names and fake emails..

is the only way to go, but the problem is this idea that we are to sign complicated legal documents that offer no guarantees and yet are supposedly binding only to the person who clicks a dialog box (there is no legal requirement that the document stay intact - it can be changed after you click). The problem is that the legal system in the u.s.a. offers no legal protection for the internet consumer. But also, the laws allow for the sale and trading of personal information all the while holding the individual fully responsible for its content. Using facebook just brings to light that reality.
