An oil pipeline rupture in southern Michigan has spilled more than 1 million gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River, a tributary of Lake Michigan.
Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm criticized current clean up efforts as "wholly inadequate" and warned of a "tragedy of historic proportions." She has applied for federal assistance.
As of Wednesday the spill was still 50 miles upstream from lake Michigan. What caused the rupture is as yet unknown.
