Church to Mark 9/11 Anniversary by Burning Korans

Florida: The Dove World Outreach Center has issued an invitation to other religious groups to join them in burning Korans on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11.

The religious group say they want to send the message that "Islam and Sharia law is not welcome in the US". They say they have received death threats over their plan but are undeterred.

The event has drawn the ire of Islamic and Christian groups alike. The National Association of Evangelicals said that the Bible teaches against repaying a wrong with a wrong and asked for the event to be cancelled.

Hate against non-Christians is basically anathema to the true teachings of Christianity; it is fiercely un-Christian-like behavior and borders on heresy against the teachings. Just goes to show that Christianity has crazies who railroad the faith into their own personal need for hate and causing suffering to others, just like Islam does.

Christians have always had their share of crazy people. They are no different from any other religion. It has all been twisted into hate, bigotry and total disdain against intelligence and tolerance. Christian Taliban types have always existed. The death threats are just as crazy from the Muslim side. I think the deduction here is that all religion has not evolved positively at all. It is still based on hate and intolerance of anybody you disagree with.

The Bible does not promote hate in any way, on the contrary, it seeks to solve problems in the most wise manners:

"Turn the other cheek" - That sounds familiar to you?

@Article
Bunch of crazy people promoting hate...sigh. It doesn´t surprise me, humanity is full of iditios.

Who are the christians to criticize? They burned millions of scientist and are responbale for hindering the progress of mankind.

I think His thoughts would be along the lines of "please don´t mention my name/leave me out of this"

According to the summary, this group

of misanthropes is also planning an anti homosexual event in order to gay bash the city´s mayor.

Perhaps this group should change the name of their church to "Westboro South".

I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.

  christian and muslim same

both sides talk out of their neck .. one day they say this, and one day they say that etc .. for whatever convenience the need is .. the both use the ideology of "eye for an eye" all the time.

leaving them blind.

  Seriously??

I love how they´re using their freedom to practise religion to curtain the freedom of other people... "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". Whoops.

Great name though; The Dove World Outreach Center

"there is nothing in the bible forbidding koran burning."

Well yes there is:
"Do not do unto others as you would that they should do unto you"
and
"Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

There is nothing in the bible forbidding bible burning, either.

True that.

On top of this burning the Qur´an is basically burning the Bible. Common events with different narrations.

  Book burning

They´re just doing to get attention (like a little kid). Ignore them.

Remember that Christian bibles are burned often. Someone will always make more, and I´m sure the same can be said for the Koran.

  WRONG

expressions, right expressions! Every facet of life has them. Love can be expressed in the wrong way as can tolerance.
Even with the Atheistic ethos- there is no God imposing morals and laws but atheists describe the actions of some as evil and of some good. Atheism has also been used to justify obvious evil. Survival of the fit is in essence an ethos that could justify the erratication of ´inferior´ peoples or previous people groups. It has been used by some to justify murder etc.

Christians can and do at times express themselves incorrectly. I guess to a certain degree correct or incorrect expression is relative to what each individual beleives. For example - I have read more than once on this site people expressing that the Bible has is extreme in its promotion of hate and intolrence then when it suits it has been promoted as a book that would say that Christians are wrong to express hate, intolerance etc because it goes against the ethos of the Bible.
No doubt the same for the koran!
In my opinion the actions of this church talked about in this article may need to be examined by the individuals within that church. Are they confident that this is the expression they want others to see? I am sure they understand that once they do this they will always be linked to this tragedy, the interpetation from others will mostly be that they are deliberately stirring antagonism and resentment.
Ultimately there is many different expressions but in the end what Jesus said is true ´A tree is known by its´ fruit.´

  What I love

is how no one here addresses how these people received death threats for expressing their freedom of speech and religion.

Guess violence is ok as long as it works for you, right?

  by: moxpearl   08/01/2010 07:13 PM
I guess you failed to read

"The death threats are just as crazy from the Muslim side."

  by: Lurker     08/01/2010 07:22 PM
  WRONG

Way to go about it maybe instead they just say Islam isn´t the truth or something a bit softer sounding but just as true!

by: alisha rose   08/02/2010 07:17 AM
  @alisha

So Islam isn´t the truth... what is? Christianity?

They are as bad as each other.

Islam should be just as welcome in the US as Christianity. Obviously the country isn´t going to abide by their laws as they would in a Muslim country, but the religion itself is no different to any other, it´s the extremists from every religion that give the rest a bad name.

  Wow

Sometimes I wonder why I bother going to church.

I feel bad not going, yet, when I see stuff like this, and then hear the priest talking out of his ass about stem cells and that abortion is the only way to get them (off topic but thats what happened the last time I was in there), I just want to stop going.

  Oh man

Did someone seriously just say the bible does not promote hate? read it. The way it seems to work for people who draw their personality from their faith, is the bible is like the force in star wars, or atom in bioshock. All purpose plot filler. Believe whatever you want about it because honestly... its just a warning sign to those of us who live in the real world.

  by: ReasonableAtheist   08/02/2010 09:09 PM
  WRONG

I just wanted to see what the reaction would be if I said the church in question could have said the same thing but in a softer way. I mean if they are as bad as each other well then who cares how they might express their opinions?
How is it more reasonable to say that we should reject both and then say that we should let both be expressed and then say neither should express it? How can you think you have an understanding of the way things of life are and not want to tell others? Hey atheists do that and chance they get! They may even feel free to bag out any other beleif and have some logic in their head that says that they are not expressing ´religious´ intolerance. Rubbish!!! And yet I have never heard an atheist side with Christianity to defend its adherents as they do the flimsy version of Islam.
