EU: Most Mobile Phones to Have Interchangeable Chargers From Next Year

EU: An agreement struck between phone manufacturers including TI, Qualcomm, Apple, TCT Mobile, Huawei Technologies, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, LGE, NEC, Nokia, and RIM means that most mobile phones will have interchangeable chargers from next year.

The standardisation is expected to reduce electronic waste and make finding a charger to recharge a phone far more convenient for consumers. The charger will work with any phone that has a USB port.

"How cool is that? This will make a lot of people extremely happy," said Dennis Abbot, an European Union spokesperson.

  Great news

- if you live in the EU. I don´t and I´m jealous. The summary doesn´t say but I wonder how much EU prodding was required to bring this about?

This is very true :)

But you never noticed, with most of the sources, if you Google whatever I Googled ... a lot say its soon or within a year.

It looks like it maybe one of those things that keep getting put off.

Im curious to know though if the intent is a run up to some new TAX on ´inneficency´.
