Time Magazine Editor Defends Horrific Cover Image

The Editor of Time Magazine (Richard Stengel) defended the decision to use the image of an Afghan Woman Mutilated by the Taliban, with the Phrase "What happens if we leave Afghanistan".

A local Taliban commander acting as judge ordered the removal of nose and ears after the 18 year old was caught trying to escape an abusive husband and in-laws.
She was held down by her brother-in-law while her husband disfigured her face with a knife.

This comes as multiple nations decide to pull out of Afghanistan.
"This is the start. It is a chain - the Dutch forces start to withdraw, followed by the Canadians, then the British by 2014," an Afghan official said.

  With all respect due

I don´t think we´re changing the minds of the taliban or abusive husbands. Nor can we kill them all.

  Go ahead and walk away

If everyone in the world ignores this it will only get worse. The men in this country have had control sooooo long they´ve lost touch with reality. They have no humanity. They will butcher a person because they "betrayed" something sacred. Regaurdless of the reason.

Religon is power and power is blinding unless there is someone on the who is strong enough to speak out for those without a voice. The press is that voice but there´s a point where the press is still powerless. There needs to be a firm hand who will strike down on evil where ever it hides.

This evil is hiding behind religon and it tears be up when I think how many people´s lives are destroyed on a daily basis due to these animals.

I respect time for running this and I hope that one day the brutality of these people will end.

Suppose it´s got nothing to do with the minerals

http://www.shortnews.com/...

From the source that was posted in a comment and quoted as it not being economically feasible to extract them.:

"He said technology and road and infrastructure improvements throughout Central Asia had made extracting and transporting Afghanistan´s mineral worth more economically feasible than back in the 1970s and 80s."

"He" refers to former Afghani finance minister, Ashraf Ghani.

As that source also says it´s nothing new... .

Although I probably don´t need to mention the countries the US and most of the rest of the world do business with... China anyone?

Afghanistan isn´t the only country where women are oppressed by evil, religious idiots (mostly Muslim).

When you think about it, it is pretty amazing that even in this modern day in age, so many people believe in such utter religious non-sense.

I would think that the editor of Time Magazine

would naturally have a functional brain but I guess this proves that wrong.

  This is so bad...

the fact they have been hunted and fighting for years, so along the way more have been joining up either through force or they are just another one of the pigs that hurt this woman this way. Sickening!

  As if...

...the human aspect is what is really keeping us there. That cover is just pandering to the masses who effectively have no real say when it comes to ending the US occupation. Short of some organized mass revolt, that is. but that´s exactly what stories, pictures and propaganda like this are meant to prevent.

w/e, I guess my heart strings should be tugged by the story and photo and I should take a compassionate but rushed stance on the US occupation of Afghanistan (just as the article intended).

  Their next cover should be

A pic of US military personnel celebrating a helicopter attack in Iraq in which 12 civilians died with the phrase, "What happens if we stay in Afghanistan".

Propaganda machine at its finest.

  Well

The problems of abuse of women in the middle east cannot be solved by an occupation, the women need to rise up, and it will be bloody. How hard is it to tell a Christian that there is no land of eternal torture to fear? It is immeasurably harder to tell one of these men that they don´t have a god given right to lord over the female populace. Because well.... i am sure all of us western men can imagine why it would be hard to give up on a way of life, that you have been taught since birth, witch tells you that your wife exists to make you happy. It does not make it right, and i would like to think that if i were raised there that i would not hold that opinion.... but i doubt that is the case.

The image isn´t even close to what I had imagined. Although Michael Jackson was pretty frightening, it´s not that bad!

  middle ages

The Taliban has been one a stabilizing influnece in Afganastan, while sending the country back to the middle ages; no one can or should advocate under the guise of religion the use of pain & suffering the repression of anyone else. Its a misconcept to believe God would approve of this, of course those who choose to cite passages of the Koran for their ends will try their best. I´m not for war, it ends life, destroys, makes corporations rich while causing nothing but dispair.

Did not mean to imply the taliban were in any way good, far from it. Its good they are not in power of the country, but when the US pulls out, they will return-

Until we figure out a better solution...

the US & Allied forces should stay there. I know it´s occupation isn´t a perfect solution, but wtf else are we supposed to do at this point?

  @article

This goes against what many Afganis say. Since the occupation, the treatment of women has worsened. Before women were relegated to the burkas and staying inside. Now, they attempt to show themselves in public and they get acid to the face or worse.

The men that are in the Afgani gov´t now were the same ones that abusing women under the Taliban rule.

Unfortunately (or fortunately from certain points of view) women were actually safer under the Taliban.

We´ve done nothing but perpetuate hate and violence with our occupation.

  They said this about IRAQ

Al-Quada .. no it was ..
Gassing Khurds .. no it was ..
Radicalism .. no it was ..
Threat to Israel .. no it was ..
WMD .. not it was ..
Twin Towers .. no it was ..
Oil .. no it was

we have a massive defense contract and Cheney´s gotta get paid!

Multilations of women, like when when civilians get killed in those ´surgical strikes´ less than 24 hrs ago. Like those reuters cameramen got killed by the gunships. Like children getting raped while their parents are mechingunned and their remaind burned in the next room. Like phosphorous bombs over entire towns. 600,000 people displaced. Close to a Decade of warcrimes and higher taxes.

But Hallibuirton, and their board members are gonna be rich. Have we not learned from this higher taxes and economic depression yet?
