Oleg Nikolaenko is accused of being responsible for one third of spam e-mails worldwide. The 23-year-old pleaded not guilty on Friday.
Nikolaenko is said to have created the botnet "Mega-D", which distributes 32 percent of all spam. He received $459,098.47 between June 4 and December 5, 2007, for the distribution of e-mails praising counterfeit goods.
He was arrested last month, accused of violations of anti-spam policies. His lawyer said that Nikolaenko is "merely accused ... of essentially a low-level felony crime."
