Your Astrological Sign Is Wrong

Astrology was developed over 2,000 years ago and because of planetary and astrological shift, you might be reading someone else´s horoscope instead of your own. According to Joe Rao a lecturer at New York´s Hayden Planetarium, this is old news.

Rao said, "Astrology tells us that the sun is in one position, whereas astronomy tells us it´s in another position. The earliest known astronomer to recognize and assess the movement of procession was Aristarchus of Samos, who lived around 280 B.C."

Our planet spins like a top, where our axis swings in a circle. Because of this our current North Star is Polaris. In the time of the pyramids, the North Star was Thuban, and in 12,000 years Vega will be the North Star.

As an astronomy enthusiast, with a slight interest in Chinese astrology, this apparent error of Western astrology always intrigued me. I always wondered why they never synchronized the astrological signs accordingly. Therefore, I rely on the Chinese astrology variant, which is based on the Moon calendar. :)

Indeed, because of the so-called "Precession" of the Earth mentioned in this article, which takes 25,920 years to complete, the Sun shifts 1 degree every 72 years. Currently the Sun moves from Pisces to Aquarius at the Spring Equinox (app. 21st of March). http://en.wikipedia.org/...

So each of the 12 astrological sign takes 2,160 years to complete. I was born in December, so according to Western astrology my sign is Sagittarius. But at my date of birth, sunset was in the constellation of Scorpio...

Interesting article!

  Not according to CNN

The CNN article mentions "tropical zodiac – which is fixed to seasons", but it does not rule out the commonly known sidereal zodiac. This tropical variant was made up by Claudius Ptolemaeus, who also introduced Geocentrism, influenced by the Catholic Church. Copernicus proved him wrong 1,400 years later...

"Ptolemy´s astrological outlook was quite practical: [...] because of the many variable factors to be taken into account: the race, country, and upbringing of a person affects an individual´s personality as much if not more than the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the precise moment of their birth," (Wikipedia)

So, because he considered influence by heavenly bodies unlikely he came up with the tropical zodiac...? Naah.

Furthermore, the CNN article mentions our Moon´s gravitation pull as cause of the precession of the equinoxes. Although the Moon and Sun have its influence, called lunisolar precession, the main cause is a gyroscope effect due to the rotation of Earth.

PS Whether star (constellations) tens of thousands of light years away, which are currently not in the same position anymore as we observe them today or just ceased to exist, can influence one´s personality and outcome of future events is another discussion of course.

Hm, this Bils Nye is also ´way ahead´ of the Babylonians, which started 2,000 BC and not "2,000 years ago". Their astrology entered Western civilization in 400 BC, some say they adopted it from the Sumerians from 3,000 BC: http://en.wikipedia.org/...

He makes the correct astronomical observation but fails to explain why.

I don´t think we´re in the same astrological sign, and even if were were it still wouldn´t make us similar on many things.

Astrology is pure pseudoscience, invented at a time when people know almost nothing.

Most probably read it just for fun and do not take it so seriously, but every time a newspaper is bought some money is wasted on things such as this.

I agree its pseudoscience but you cannot ridicule the civilizations who invented/discovered this as ´people know almost nothing´. They were not that different from today´s societies w/o the technological riffraff. In some ways, women´s rights f.e., they were even ahead on most of governments.

True, its fun to read and one shouldn´t act or live to it. I took an interest in Chinese astrology and somehow there´s a catch in it, which I cannot explain. And I don´t need to, I just wanted to know.

You two might as well call the billions of monotheistic worshippers on this planet retarded and/or stupid, ´cause it´s more or less the same thing. But ignorance is worse.

What´s wrong with ridicule? I´ve been told worse, going to hell, I´m immoral etc.. much worse stuff than ridicule. The people who lived then are dead and not all of them were part of this invention. Many if not most were illiterate and had to get their information from others, so they couldn´t that easily make up their own minds back in those days. They might have believed it but that doesn´t make all of them dumb in every situation. Newton believed in alchemy, he was hardly stupid was he? And of course people got some things right (we wouldn´t have gotten this far as a human race if they didn´t).
"You two might as well call the billions of monotheistic worshippers on this planet retarded and/or stupid, ´cause it´s more or less the same thing. But ignorance is worse."

There´s a difference between calling some beliefs stupid and saying that they are completely stupid because of this. I can with certainty say that there are intelligent believers, so don´t think this is some sort of simplistic binary thinking from my part. And I used to be a believer myself. I wasn´t stupid because of it, but some of the things I believed in were stupid. And I´m probably not free from that now either.
Ignorance can be bad, but it can be cured, dogma however is far more difficult to free yourself from. Unfortunalely ignorance is often promoted by the religious and the believers in new-age because reality doesn´t fit together with their beliefs. This is why there is so much distrust against evolution for instance. Takes away God from the picture...
Bad things can come in many forms, it can also come in polical form, but that´s another discussion...
