Thousands of Dead Squids and Octopi in Portugal

Beaches in northern Portugal were littered with dead octopi for a stretch of 5 miles. The cause of these deaths is yet unknown.

There was also a case of a 20 ft. octopus washing ashore in the Bahamas on January 19. This particular animal´s death has not been linked to the dead octopi in Portugal but if more show up dead, the remains will be tested for the cause.

This is not the first case of dead animals. So far, 2011 can boast of being the year that small animals all over the world have been dying in massive numbers. Brazil has reported over two million fish washing shore.

Don´t know if I should be an alarmist, but this is becoming an all to common occurance.. Is anyone else worried that something bad is bound to happen on a global scale?

Actually yeah. I don´t know what though. The occurrences seem pretty abrupt to just say "Global Warming". More like a pole shift or a Super-Volcano or something.

No serious, it would be time to brace for more when the results come in and they are negative.

I´m partial to a polar reversal as well.

Though, there have simply been a crap load of strange animal die-offs lately. Some explainable, some not.

To be sure, it is weird. Luckily the fossil record attributes not one single extinction to polar reversal. Whew!

  my 2 cents

@CaveHermit:
I don´t think your post is too serious but I think that there would literally be billions of dead sea creatures -- many of which wouldn´t have even been known to makind because they lived so deep -- if 1/3 of them were to die.

@VermiciousG/zirschky:
Polar shifts aren´t that quick and there would be more dire indicators. This would include our skin being scorched in the middle of the change when no magnetic field surrounds the planet to block the radiation, etc from the sun. Scientists say it takes years to do the full shift and the next one is due to start @ December 22, 2012 11:11. ;)

You all need to calm down. Mass groups of animals have been dropping dead at a rate of EVERY OTHER freaking day(and that´s just North America!!), for the last 30 years (when we started actually recording the events) and have probably been going on longer.

There´s no "pattern" to see here people. It´s the classic case of people trying to find a pattern when none exists.

Sorry to break the news to you all.

HOLY SHIT! COULD YOU BE A LITTLE MORE CONDESCENDING!!! WE DON´T ALL READ THE PARK RANGER TRADE GAZETTE!!! IF THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING A LOT AND UNDER REPORTED THEN THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION!!! MAYBE NEXT TIME JUST POST A LINK OR SOMETHING!!! BEFORE IT´S TOO LATE, JACKASS!!!!

"There´s no ´pattern´ to see here people. It´s the classic case of people trying to find a pattern when none exists."

Actually, its a classic case of people simply remarking that, "Gee, there appear to be a lot of bizarre animal die-offs making the news recently."

Nobody here appears to be actually identifying anything like a "pattern". It might have been a bit too subtle for you but I was joking with my polar reversal comment as I´m assuming Verm was with his "super volcano" comment. Obviously, nobody is going to blame sudden die offs on a super volcano or a polar reversal because those things aren´t occurring at the moment. Gotta have something a bit more RELATED than birds dropping dead to say that a volcano is erupting or the poles are switching. Am I right or am I right?

So, then I´m confused on what you seem to be in a tiz about? Are you upset that people are noticing that animal die offs are in the news and are commenting that it is a bizarre phenomenon that they don´t frequently hear about? Are you upset because you, personally, since the age of 5, have followed the mass die off of the animal groups that once populated the pages of your Ranger Rick magazines? You must be incensed that you´ve known about this phenomenon for so long and nobody but you has cared enough to notice until now! On behalf of everyone here, we truly apologize for not having stumbled across the same Huffington Post article you did and then pretending we had known all along that die offs were an everyday occurrence.

You´ve taught us all something very valuable here today and we´re all better off for having you here. Looking forward to reading more of your comments in the future! I´m sure they´ll all be as insightful and pleasantly written as your previous ones. Cheers and happy trolling!

"Luckily the fossil record attributes not one single extinction to polar reversal. Whew!"

Not true.
"In the early 20th century geologists first noticed that some volcanic rocks were magnetized in a direction opposite from what was expected. The first estimate of the timing of magnetic reversals was made in the 1920s by Motonori Matuyama, who observed that the magnetic fields of some rocks in Japan were reversed and that these rocks were all of early Pleistocene age or older. At the time, the Earth´s polarity was poorly understood and the possibility of reversal aroused little interest" http://en.wikipedia.org/...

From your link:
"There is no uncontested evidence that a magnetic field reversal has ever caused any biological extinctions"

  Mmmmm calamari...

And, as I sat there on the shore in these last days of Earth, with my tempura batter and deep frier, I pondered how the lord could be so generous and yet so demanding.

I´m very much a sushi lover, and once in a Japanese restaurant, along with my rolls, I ordered a squid salad. The adorable bespectacled waitress reading my order back said "...skreee sarrod...". That story is completely unrelated except that whenever I hear the word "squid", that comes to mind and puts a big smile on my face.

I actually blame aliens for the mass die-offs of late. My theory is that they are bent on taking over the Earth, and in doing so they are causing the extinction of one species at a time, beginning with the most intelligent and working their way down. It will be some time before they get to us humans so you´ll have a while to get your affairs in order. Or else a whale farted like Manny said.

I don´t think I could have been more condescending, that was my intent.

to quote you;
"I´m partial to a polar reversal as well. "

which means you went through the trouble of at one point reading about polar reversal, but neglected to do any type of search on if this has happened before. Yes, I´m calling you ignorant. And anyone else who is overreacting or not doing a 2 minute search on the subject (seriously, that´s all it took, 2 minutes to find out "oh, it´s in no was a catastrophe, it´s something that just happens")

It´s called fact checking. Stories insinuate "something weird" is going on, I felt "bullshit", did research, and verified that people are just overreacting (my girlfriend was probably the worst offender, she didn´t leave her house for 3 days after the mass cow die off last Friday. Yes, I was only slightly less an a-hole to her than I am here when I corrected her sudden phobia.)

Now you know there´s nothing strange going on, and won´t waste too much more time (hopefully) going on in your head about "hmm polar shift...super-volcano, what could be causing this", and (in theory) you´ll be better off for my asshole-ness.

I´m a prick, and have every right to be, and am proud of it. (after all, I really don´t like other people, but I have my own issues there, which probably require more therapy than I can afford to sort out.

@zirschky

To answer your (assuming rhetorical) questions (just because I´m a dick like that which doesn´t know when to stop, see; above)

I´m upset because people are overreacting, and in some cases straight up flipping out over something in which there is no reason to flip out. (kind of like how every mom nowadays assumes their child is going to get kidnapped, and thus goes into over protection mode, when in reality kidnappings happen to less than 1% of children. It just hasn´t escalated that far.)

Just as you guys have read on my prick-ness, I read (and actually have been hearing about constantly at class every week) people being "stupid" for lack of a better term. That bothers me just as much as my condescending, A-hole tone bothered you.

I didn´t claim to have known for a long time how common mass deaths were (though I did have an idea they weren´t all that rare, every year there are a few stories about "a bunch of fish floating dead, washing up on beaches" and I just sort of figured "well if it can happen to fish, why not everything else?" and then I found "oh, it does, guess I was right".

As I am in fact not a troll, just a prick (slight difference)

No further comments or replies to me are necessary, and I won´t be replying to anymore "hey you´re a prick" threads, as, I know I am. (unless they are particularly funny or clever, then I may respond. I give credit where credit´s due after all)

Uhhhh, thanks for clearing that up..... prick. Your girlfriend must be proud if you treat her the same way. She actually seems a lot more intelligent than you as far as I´m concerned. If there is a mass cow die off near where I live, I´m going to assume there is an environmental contaminant, disease, or something causing it. I would treat any news on the subject with some skepticism until I was sure everything was OK.

In the impending zombie apocalypse, your girlfriend is going to be alive and well in a bunker having sex with the protagonist while your brains are being sucked out with a slurpie straw by the undead horde... and all the while you´ll be berating the zombies for being so stupid.

As far as fact checking goes... you read article after article on the internet of animal/fish/avian die-offs. You begin to wonder if they are related or if there is some bizarre cause. You find more articles on the internet saying that it´s a common occurrence... so then you tell people on the internet that they´re stupid for wondering if they are related or if it has some bizarre cause. And that makes you smart and them stupid? To be honest, this is the internet - for any given topic you can probably find as many articles on one side of a debate as on the other side, with each person vehemently defending their position, listing facts and sources, and going on about how stupid anyone who disagrees with them is.

If people have been telling you in class every week that you´re an asshole, and you´re proud of that then there is a problem. Don´t get me wrong, I was a kid once too. I was anti-social, didn´t fit in, and felt like I was somehow "smarter" than the sheep around me... but I kept that crap to myself mostly and people liked me even if they thought I was a bit weird. For the most part, in retrospect, I was wrong. I´m an idiot. If people being "stupid" gets you that fired up, you may want to consider getting on some medication, because there will always be an over-abundance of stupidity where humans are considered. Instead of fuming to the point where you´re about to go postal and being a dick to people around you, if you chill out and take a step back, understand where others are coming from, you might realize that you´re being every bit as stupid at times as they are.

VermiciousG and Zirschky are both extremely intelligent people as far as I´m concerned. You´re not going to win anyone´s opinion over by calling them stupid or ignorant, just make yourself look bad.

That´s true, I stand corrected. Thanks.

If we can trust Wiki on this, that is. The link also states that Mankind survived several reversals. It´s hard to find decent info w/o having to plough through zillion pages of 2012 bogus... :)

Thanks but technically he is correct. I was ignorant and he did enlighten me. My only problem is that tizubythefizo is a complete and utter chode.

Being ignorant is merely a lack of information. Easily rectified. Being a chode is a lack of dick. Not so easy to fix.
