Catholics And Protestants Revise Bible for 21st Century, Mary Now a Young Woman Instead of "Virgin"

The U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops has altered much in the New American Bible, which is feminist sensitive in such references as Jesus having us "fish for people" as opposed to the older version where we "fish for men".

The translation from the Greek is said to be more accurate in Isaiah 7:14 where Mary is now a young woman replacing the translation as "virgin".
The NIV, the Protestant revision of the King James Bible has nearly identical revisions.

Southern Baptists and other Evangelist groups are not comfortable with the latest version and remain loyal to the 1984 edition.
Other changes are the word "booty" being replaced with "plunder" as the former has taken on new interpretations.

When can I expect a Bible in Ebonics?

...And God said to Abraham, "Word is born." ...and on the 7th day, God said, "SHIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEETTTTTT!"

  If they don´t....
add in a new chapter where Jesus sez, "Hate the Gays for they will be the downfall of all mankind", they don´t have a hypocritical hair on their balls. I really love how the hardline evangelical Baptists want to stick with the 1984 translation. Why aren´t they using the Dead Sea Scrolls like a true believer would do? I really loved the part about it being against Gods law to defecate inside the wall of Jerusalem. Could you imagine the express bus on the way out of town now days. FASTER!!! Cherry pickers the lot.

  Global religion at it´s finest
I wish these Abrahamic religions would get their wishy-washy facts straight. First it´s a leviathan, then it´s a whale. First it´s a virgin, then it´s a young woman. First it´s men, then it´s people...

  All religion
Is now anyway... Complete and Utter Bullshit.

They all started out "pure" or close to pure but you know, energy in this universe to our knowledge becomes more Complex over time leading ones to believe COMPLEX=SMART.

Our minds are not our brains.

King James had it purged and re-written, they may as well, too. The ´young woman´ birth of Christ instead of the ´virgin´ birth of Christ just doesn´t sound right somehow. So, there was never an immaculate conception? This neutralizes Christianity. LOL
  by: Lurker     04/22/2011 01:46 AM
FYI: The immaculate conception was Mary.
Not bad for a Buddhist, huh?

  UHHH? VermiciousG?
The story is about Mary being now a young woman instead of a virgin. How is what I said inaccurate? Mary was a virgin and through immaculate conception gave birth to Jesus. That is exactly what I said. I don´t get your statement. So, now they are saying she wasn´t a virgin so the immaculate conception thing could not have happened since she is no longer a virgin. Kinda messes up the whole Jesus is God myth, huh?

While I don´t subscribe to the comic book w/o pics it does say this:

Revelation 22:18-19 (King James Version)

18For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

19And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

Those quotes are specific unto the book of Revelation and have no bearing on "the bible" as a whole. The translation should be something more along the lines of "propechy" or "writing", rather than book.

I´m not sure why people are so up in arms about this. The fact of the matter is that the bible has been interpreted, amended and altered thousands of times throughout history. For Protestants and Catholics alike, there are many texts that have been fully removed from each particular cannon and portions of particular books that have been distorted, misinterpreted and editorially revised. This is really nothing new.

I graduated from a religiously affiliated university and during the course of my undergrad was lucky enough to take a limited enrollment class on non-canonical texts and apocryphal writings from George Lyons--the guy most scholars consider *the* authority on the Pauline epistles. More than anything, what I learned is that, with respect to religious texts, we cherry-pick and compile the books and writings that complete our picture of the world and call it "authoritative".
  by: zirschky     04/22/2011 06:56 AM
Sorry, I guess I wasn´t clear. The conception of Jesus within Mary wasn´t the immaculate conception.

The conception of Mary within HER mother was the immaculate conception. Mary was born free of original sin making her virgin birth...plausible?...

I don´t get it either but I was raised Catholic and I know that St. Bernadette spoke on this. Mary didn´t HAVE an immaculate conception, she WAS, the immaculate conception.

So, you are saying that Jesus is NOT God´s son, born of a virgin. I never heard that theory in my life.
  by: Lurker     04/22/2011 03:16 PM
  @Dr Dim
It was a spear, from a roman soldier..Giving birth to the "Spear of Destiny", the much sought after artifact referenced in pop culture today, in things like "Hellboy" and "Constatine" as a magical spear that makes you immortal as long as you possess it.

Given the fact that it became that way by being coated in Jesus´s blood... I don´t know how that would work considering Jesus´s blood didnt do him much good in being saved from the spear in the first place.

  by: Pyronius     04/22/2011 03:16 PM
if a god were infallible, wouldn´t it´s word not need to be updated to stay hip?

If it wanted only men to have the fish, and women to be discriminated against, and it be ok to have slaves, and have sex with your sister, then isn´t that how it should stay? Otherwise you´re just admitting it was all wrong to begin with......

From the Wiki

"The Immaculate Conception of Mary is, according to Catholic doctrine, the conception of the Virgin Mary without any stain ("macula" in Latin) of Original Sin.[1] It is one of the four dogmata in Roman Catholic Mariology. Under this aspect Mary is sometimes called the Immaculata (the Immaculate One), particularly in artistic contexts.[2]

The doctrine states that, from the first moment of her existence, Mary was preserved by God from the Original Sin and filled with sanctifying grace that would normally come with baptism after birth. Catholics believe Mary "was free from any personal or hereditary sin".[3][4] Mary´s immaculate conception should not be confused with the Incarnation of her son Jesus Christ; the conception of Jesus is celebrated as the Annunciation to Mary. Catholics do not believe that Mary, herself, was the product of a Virgin Birth."
  by: VermiciousG     04/22/2011 08:16 PM
@deliciousG and Lurkster
The theological issue at hand is not one of Mary´s birth but rather her worthiness. Mary was born with original sin. Being human entails such a consequence, or so doctrine would have us believe. However, God found Mary to be pure and worthy, which is indicated in the text by "virginity". Christ of course was born without original sin, because per Jewish tradition, it was/is believed that sin is born in a man´s "seed". Thus, we get the immaculate conception.

Mary in no sense is worshiped by Catholics. Mary is revered as a saint, like many other saints. In no sense of the word idol are saints "idols". An idol, in the Christian sense, is a false god whom one worships in the stead of the true "God". Saints are not worshiped in this fashion and never, for Christians that revere saints, do they eclipse the commands of the true "God". It´s pretty simple, really.
  by: zirschky     04/22/2011 08:40 PM
It´s important to understand that 3 nails didn´t kill him. Being nailed to a piece of wood in that manner would have lead to a long, slow suffocation.

Why didn´t God heal him? Why didn´t God just allow him to escape? You guys are missing the point. Jesus´ plan was to die on the cross. That was the whole idea. He told Judas to "go and do what you must do." He waited in the garden knowing what was coming in the morning. His whole mission was to die. Incidentally that´s why the Jews shouldn´t be held responsible for his death. He used them to martyr himself.

Now I don´t believe he was the son of God or at least no more so than you or me so why am I, a Buddhist defending the story. Because a very long time ago a man allowed himself to die a painful, agonizing, 3 day death in the belief that it would get the rest of us into heaven and even though I don´t think that it worked it´s still about as selfless and altruistic a thing as I´ve ever heard.

Selfless and altruism is my goal now. I just wish that it were what the Christians still believed in.
  by: VermiciousG     04/22/2011 08:41 PM
Look, All I was saying is that there is a misunderstanding in terminology.

"The immaculate conception" is what they call Mary´s conception.
Jesus´ conception is called the "Annunciation to Mary".
  by: VermiciousG     04/22/2011 08:52 PM
Immaculate doesn´t mean miraculous or godly.

adj \i-?ma-ky?-l?t\
Definition of IMMACULATE
1: having no stain or blemish
2: pure
3: containing no flaw or error
a: spotlessly clean
b: having no colored spots or marks
  by: VermiciousG     04/22/2011 08:58 PM
  Oh, well
I was raised a Southern Baptist (I know)and they have their own ideas. The Immaculate Conception was how Mary became pregnant with Jesus. Mary is nothing more than Jesus´ mother. She is not revered as a saint or anything more. The only way a virgin can become pregnant is either by deception (she lied) or immaculate conception. It´s not important in the scheme of things, anyway.

I wasn´t coming down on you. You´re quite correct. It just seemed that there was some confusion of theological principles that differ between Protestants and Catholics on the basis of terminology but have the same idea at heart. I was just trying to sift through it concisely. The face/palm was more directed at shannon.

Also, I love how you distance yourself from the issue with the phrase, "...what they call..." :)

I’m amazed at the responses to this rather simple story of revamping the Good Book.
But then what would Easter be without quibbling over a spiral cut ham (unless you’re Kosher) about fine points of theology and why everyone eventually becomes a Buddhist.
So here’s wishing everyone a happy and philosophic Easter season.

  It´s a common mistake.
First of all, I have visited this site for many years. I have always been content to lurk and just read the comments of others. However, for some reason I felt compelled to leave a comment today. So, here it is!

I was raised in a very deeply religious Catholic home. My grandfather was a minister so mother grew up in the Episcopal Church. My mom converted to Catholicism so she could marry my dad. For some reason or another she became a very devout member of the Church and she wanted to impress that faith on her children. I no longer am an active member of the Church but I remember most of what I was taught in catechism.
Anyhow, VermiciousG is totally correct in the statement that the "Immaculate Conception" does not refer to the conception of Christ. I was also taught that it refers to the conception/birth of Mary. However, most of the Catholics I know/have known in the past seem to believe that it refers to the conception of Jesus as well.
Just thought I´d throw my two cents in.
