Study: Gastric Bypass Better for Weight Loss Than Banding

A Swiss study suggests that gastric bypass surgery is the better treatment for faster and longer-lasting weight loss than gastric banding.

The only drawback to gastric bypasses is that they are a bit more dangerous whereas there were more complications and more follow-up operations after gastric banding.

The research by Dr. Michel Suter and his team at Chablais Hospital in Aigle studied 442 patients who underwent either gastric bypass or banding surgery.

I have a great nephew who had the gastric banding procedure. He got a Streptococcus infection inside his entire abdominal body cavity and almost died. The gastric band was contaminated before it was installed. They had to remove it and give him high levels of antibiotics.

He is doing okay, now. He has lost some weight with diet and exercise. He had the band - not the bypass. The band almost killed him. Someone who touched the band before installation had strep throat, they surmised. No procedure can be considered routine. Everything has risks.
