Maryland Governor Signs Same-Sex Marriage Bill Into Law

Maryland Gov. Martin O´Malley signed into law Thursday evening a bill to legalize gay marriage. The law takes effect in 2013.

"Religious freedom was the very reason for our state´s founding and at the heart of religious freedom is the freedom of individual conscience," O´Malley explained before signing the legislation.

30 states already have constitutional amendments aiming to ban gay marriage.
