Meghan Vogel´s show of sportsmanship has gained attention nationwide. The teenager, a junior distance runner for West Liberty-Salem (Ohio), who won the the state’s Division III 1,600 meter race, helped a struggling competitor instead of passing her.
Vogel, 17 saw Arden McMath of Arlington collapse on the field and stopped to carry her across the finish line. Vogel could have been disqualified according to race rules, but the meet officials took no action.
McMath was given the 14th place because Vogel made sure she crossed the finish line before her. Vogel finished 15th.
